Speed up Internet connection on Windows 11 computer
Turn off internet connection metering
Windows has an internet connection metering feature that makes it easy for you to monitor and control your internet traffic, and Windows 11 is no exception. However, this feature can prevent some applications on Windows from using the internet connection at the most optimal speed. Therefore, when you see that your Windows 11 computer has a slow internet connection, you can try turning off the internet connection metering feature.
How to do it:
Step 1 : Press Win + I to open Settings.
Step 2 : In the Settings window , click Network & internet in the left sidebar.
Step 3 : Depending on the type of connection you are using, click on the WiFi or Ethernet connection then click on the section labeled properties.
Step 4 : Scroll down to find and turn off the Metered connection option.
Run internet troubleshooter
Windows 11's built-in troubleshooter can also help you fix many issues, including internet connection problems.
You can open and run the internet troubleshooter by following these steps:
Step 1 : Press Win + I to open Settings.
Step 2 : Scroll down to find and click on Troubleshoot.
Step 3 : Click on Other troubleshooters.
Step 4 : Click the Run button next to Internet Connections to run the internet connection troubleshooter.
Step 5 : Wait for the system to finish finding and fixing errors, then check to see if the problem has been fixed.
Set lower bandwidth for Windows Update
You probably didn't know that Windows allows you to set the amount of bandwidth used by Windows Update. Now that you know, you can adjust Windows Update to use less bandwidth, avoiding affecting the internet connection of other tasks.
How to do it:
Step 1 : Press Win + I to open Settings
Step 2 : Click on Windows Update on the left sidebar then click on Advanced options in the Windows Update box that just appeared.
Step 3 : Here, scroll down to find and click on Delivery Optimization .
Step 4 : Turn off the Allow downloads from other PCs option in the invitation window, then click on Advanced options .
Step 5 : Under Download settings, select Absolute bandwidth and click on both options below and select the limit appropriate to your internet connection.
Alternatively, if you don't want to enter a specific number, you can also choose a percentage limit by clicking Percentage of measured bandwidth . and then using the slider below to select the most appropriate percentage.
Turn off data-intensive processes
Sometimes there are one or more applications or background processes that consume a lot of data on your Windows 11 computer, thereby slowing down the connection of other applications. To solve this problem, you can turn off the processes that are consuming a lot of data.
Step 1 : Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to run Task Manager.
Step 2 : With the old Task Manager interface, click on the Performance tab then click on the Open Resource Monitor button in the bar below. With the new Task Manager , switch to the Performance tab then click on the three dots button in the upper right corner and select Resource Monitor .
Step 3 : In the Resource Monitor window , select the Network tab and identify the process that is consuming a lot of internet bandwidth that you are not using. Right-click on that process and select End Process .
Update network driver
Using an outdated network driver can also cause problems when connecting to the internet. Therefore, updating the network driver is one of the solutions you can try.
Step 1 : Press the Win button to open the Start menu then type device manager. Press Enter when you see Device Manager appear in the search results box.
Step 2 : In the Device Manager window , click to expand the Network adapter option and right-click on the Ethernet or WiFi driver (depending on the network you are using) and select Update driver.
Step 3 : Follow the on-screen steps to update the driver for the network connection.
Change DNS
Windows 11's default connection doesn't use DNS. However, sometimes connecting through DNS from big players like Google or Cloudflare will help speed up your internet.
You can try using internet connection via DNS by following these steps:
Step 1 : Press Win + R to open Run then type ncpa.cpl and press Enter.
Step 2 : In the Network Connection window , right-click on the internet connection you are using, either WiFi or Ethernet, and select Properties.
Step 3 : In the new window that appears, double-click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) .
Step 4 : In the General tab, click to select Use the following DNS server addresses . In the Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server sections , enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 respectively and then click OK. Stop using VPN
VPN applications are designed to route your internet connection through different servers. Therefore, in some cases, it will slow down your internet speed. Therefore, if you feel that your internet connection on your Windows 11 computer is slow, you can temporarily try stopping using VPN to see if it solves the problem.
Reset network settings
You can also reset network settings on Windows 11 to see if that solves the problem.
Step 1 : Press Win + I to open Settings. Click Network & internet on the left sidebar then click Advanced network settings on the right.
Step 2 : Scroll down to find and tap Network reset .
Step 3 : Click the Reset now button and wait for the computer to complete the task. Once done, restart the computer and reconnect to the network to see if the problem has been fixed.
Other cases
Sometimes your internet connection is slow due to factors other than the operating system or software. Therefore, you should also check your network equipment and network connection cables for problems. You can also contact your internet service provider for support when there is a problem with your network connection.
In addition, you should review whether your subscription package still meets your needs. If not, you need to register for a new subscription package with a larger capacity.
