In this article, I would like to show you how to use Norton Ghost for DOS ver 2003, but it is compatible with ver Ghosts from 5.0 and above. This article has 2 parts, the first part is an overview of Ghost, if you are only interested in how to implement Ghost, please read part two. Why do we have to Ghost? Because that's the best way to store data, programs, drivers, configure machine settings, generally everything on your hard drive. The name Ghost actually tells all about the capabilities that this program can do. The Ghost program creates an image, is actually a giant compressed file containing all the volume of data on your hard drive at the time that we do the ghost, then we can rest assured . My hard drive, fdisk, format, uprage, install a new software . without worrying about my old data, if necessary, with a few simple steps, a little bit of time plus the cup of coffee, you have the same system again. Which operating systems, software, FAT versions are compatible with Ghost? Ghost does not take that seriously, more accurately, Ghost does not distinguish which operating system (95, 98, Me, 2K, XP), Software (WinZip, Office, Player .), or distribution Any area (FAT, FAT32, NTFS), everything is equal in Ghost and it considers everything to be data, what it does is put everything in place where it needs to be. Disk and Partition Disk are obviously drives, and Partition? That's Disk Partitioning, if we open Windows and see that in our computer there are drives C and D, we say it has two drives, is this correct? Obviously . not sure, it may be just 2 partitions. A physical drive (the one that you can hold in your hand and costs several tens to several hundred dollars), can be divided into several partitions (we can call logical drives), and for each disk that logic can be accessed and formatted one by one without affecting the other, as if it were completely separate from each other. With the current large hard drive capacity (several tens to several hundred GigaByte), we should (not force) divide it into multiple logical drives for easy use and data storage. Using Ghost In this section, I assume that you have two logical drives (two partitions) that are C and D on a physical drive. The data you need Ghost is the C drive installed Win98SE. These parameters are only symbolic, if you have more than 2 hard drives, run WinMe, 2K, want a ghost disc D and not a C, still . OK! Perform Ghost boot screen 1. Create any folder, such as Ghost folder in drive D, copy the ghost2k3.exe file into it. 2. I use Win98, so I can open Explorer and double-click the ghost2k3.exe file to run it. For Win2K or XP, you have to boot DOS from a bootable floppy or boot CD, after entering DOS, you type D: Ghostghost2k3.exe 3. You will be able to access Ghost screen Select Local -> Partition To Image 4. To start the ghost, select Local, Patition To Image Select the physical drive that needs Ghost 5. The program will ask the drive you need Ghost, usually it is correct, click OK Select the partition you want to ghost 6. Select the Patition that you want ghost, in this case, select Primary (because I want to ghost my C drive), click OK. Select the place to save the image file (image) 7. Select the place where you want to save the image file, ghost usually takes the folder containing the ghost.exe file as the default folder, you can accept it, still can choose the location other. But note that you cannot leave the Patition image file that you want to ghost, in which case you cannot create the image file on the C drive. Type in the image file name and select Save, for example I type Win98SE. 8. If your D drive is empty, there is no dialog box, but you should choose High compression to save space, High compression is only a bit slower than compression, not significant. Select Yes when the message "Proceed with partition image creation?" 9. Obviously, select Yes when you get the following message: "Proceed with partition image creation?" So, you should go . to drink coffee, but hope that your home is not . unexpected power outage. How to restore Patition from image file Obviously, you must boot into DOS, run ghost2k3.exe. Coming here because you want to recover data from the image, it is obvious that you must choose "From Image", but NOTICE OF DANGER. If you choose Disk or Patition, you can select "From Image", but why are there both options? Here is the answer: - If you select "Disk from Image" then after Un-Ghost, you only have one C drive even though you have 2 drives C and D before, the reason is that this option means "Create a drive From the image file "and since there is only one drive, after Un-Ghost, Norton Ghost automatically links 2 Partition together to form a single Partition of C. All data contained on D is deleted. - If you select "Partition from Image" after the Un-Ghost you will have 2 drives, the C drive contains the data that you had previously ghosted and the D drive still retains all its data. In my opinion, you should choose the second way to be safer. Select un-ghost image file After selecting "Partition from Image" or "Disk from Image", the program will ask you the image file for Un-Ghost, I choose Win98SE.gho, click Open Select the partition you want to un-ghost Select the Patition you want Un-Ghost, here I select Primary (drive C, if you want Un-Ghost to drive to another drive, you select the corresponding partition), click OK. You click OK to continue! The process of . drinking coffee starts, after the program completes, you can boot the machine again and see . the old roof. Source: Tuoi Tre
