A large number of Windows PCs are about to become obsolete because of Copilot
Microsoft is looking to set new standards for PC hardware specifications by introducing a minimum 16GB RAM on AI PC systems.
This comes from TrendForce's market research report, with the most likely reason being to push AI PCs because they need built-in AI acceleration for some of the AI features available in Windows 11 23H2. This is especially true of Copilot, an AI chatbot that automates and generates work.
Many Windows PCs currently have 8 GB RAM or less.
Microsoft has been vigorously developing Copilot in recent times, including moving towards a dedicated Copilot key on Windows PC keyboards, similar to the current Windows key.
Copilot and other Microsoft AI engines will require certain hardware for local acceleration, the first of which is an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) used for specialized processing and requests Second is memory. Hence why Microsoft needs AI PCs to have at least 16GB of RAM for both native and cloud-based Copilot features to work.
To run Copilot well, your PC needs 16 GB RAM or more.
There are plenty of other Copilot announcements like a dedicated Copilot key, a Copilot Pro subscription service that adds AI tools like ChatGPT Plus, as well as a feature currently being tested that will tailor Copilot's chat responses Build on previous conversations by saving them. While the aforementioned revelations remain controversial, the 16GB RAM requirement for all AI PCs is easily one of the most concerning announcements regarding Copilot and Windows AI in general.
In fact, 16 GB will be the RAM standard for all future Windows laptops and desktops. This will spread in the future as manufacturers see PC AI as the inevitable future.
