Tesla Model Y sets world record for self-driving from factory to customer's home, completely without a driver

In what is being described as a global first, a Tesla Model Y has completed a self-driving journey from the factory straight to the home of a customer who bought the car, with no one inside. The world's largest electric car company has posted a video recording the entire journey, in which the car used its Full Self-Driving (FSD) assist system to move without any problems.

 

This was no easy ride. The 30-minute trip put Tesla's FSD system to the real-world test as it traversed parking lots, highways, and urban areas.

 

CEO Elon Musk expressed his excitement on X, confirming that this special 'delivery' was completed a day ahead of schedule. He emphasized:

No one in the car or remotely controlling it. COMPLETELY autonomous! To our knowledge, this is the first driverless automated ride on a public road.

This automated delivery method promises to revolutionize the car distribution process: eliminating the need for customers to visit dealerships and minimizing the journeys of delivery staff, thereby cutting operating costs. While Tesla hopes to replicate the model, specific implementation plans have not been revealed.

The achievement comes at a time when Tesla needs a boost after the botched operation of its robotaxi service in Austin last week. As soon as the 10 Model Y robotaxi vehicles began operating, there were reports of them violating traffic laws while carrying passengers. Notably, these vehicles still had a safety officer in the passenger seat and were monitored remotely 24/7 to intervene when necessary.
