Activities to help children learn critical thinking

Critical thinking is one of the most important life skills to have. It not only builds a strong character but also makes a wise, humble and successful person. However, only a few schools are able to nurture critical thinking skills due to their standardized curriculum. As a parent, you can encourage your child to think critically by doing some activities at home. Here are some activities that will help you understand how to teach critical thinking to your child:

 

Artistic Creation

Encouraging your child to express their thoughts through art is a great way to nurture critical thinking skills. When children draw pictures or compose music to express things they may not know how to put into words, this requires critical thinking skills.

Practicing artistic skills and nurturing creativity is an essential activity for children to develop critical thinking skills. This is no simple task. This is one of the many reasons why art has long been appreciated.

 

Teach children how to create hypotheses

When you spend time with your child, you can actively teach them how to develop their own ideas and theories. For example, if you are reading a story to your child, you can stop mid-story and start asking them questions about things like what they think about the characters, what they think will happen next and why. Ask them how they feel the story will end.

Open-ended, spontaneous questions allow children to think logically and outside the box. Sometimes, their creative answers may even surprise you! Encourage them, ask open-ended questions, and give them enough time to come up with great answers.

You can even use real-life situations to ask questions like this. For example, if you are having dinner with your child, you could ask them how they think these noodles are made and the process involved. Or if you are stuck in traffic, you could ask them what they think the prime minister or minister would think about how the traffic jam would be resolved.

Solve the puzzle together

Puzzle games are great for building brain cells. Whether it's Monopoly, Tic Tac Toe, Match or Match, Shoot and Climb or many others, your child will actively build their critical thinking skills by playing these games.

Through puzzles and brain games, your child will gradually learn to build strategies, understand the basics of game theory, and gradually build these skills until they become second nature.

 

Your presence is also important when it comes to puzzles. These puzzles may seem difficult and uninteresting if your child plays them alone, but playing them together can be a fun and wonderful bonding experience.

Play role-playing games, solve real-world problems

Give your child a real-life problem, such as world hunger or global warming, to pretend play and ask them to come up with solutions. For example, if they were the minister, how would they solve these problems? Critical thinking games like these allow children to learn about their environment and become aware of it while thinking critically to come up with solutions.

These games also allow children to understand the real challenges that people around the world face. Through parental encouragement, children are not only motivated to think deeply about any topical issues but also proactively come up with solutions, which can benefit their future careers and ideologies.

Play with building blocks

Building blocks and LEGOs are great toys for practicing critical thinking skills. The endless possibilities allow your child to let their imagination run wild. By creating different things with them, you encourage them to use more of their brain to turn their ideas into reality. From dinosaurs and buildings to spaceships and model houses, when your child builds their imagination into reality, they are actively activating each of those neurons.

You can also achieve great results by playing Minecraft  with your kids. Essentially a virtual world made up of building blocks, you and your child will have a great bonding experience that is both fun and rewarding.
