Secure personal data on Windows XP
We have many people sharing a computer. The problem is that each person has a folder or drive that only that person can access, and others do not, and does not need to use any security software.
We have many people sharing a computer. The problem is that each person has a folder or drive that only that person can access, and others do not, and does not need to use any security software.
Here we use the built-in security utility of window XP. For example, there are 2 people who use the same computer as me and my younger brother. I hold admin rights and my brother is not, so I will create 2 folders for 2 people named 'data-me' and 'data-em'.
1 / Prepare
- HDH used is window XP
- The drive containing the protected folder must be formatted in NTFS format
- Login to HDH with Administrator account
2 / Operation
a) Create user account
- Right click on the My Computer icon in the Desktop and select Manage
- Select System Tools-Local users and Groups-User section
- Right click on the user to select New User
+ User Name field type user name to create, here I type 'em', then set the password. Then press Create .
3 / Assign rights
B1: Go to My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options . select the View tab and tick the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) section
B2: Right click on the 'data-he' folder select Properties , select the Security tab
In the Group or user names section , leave only 3 users as shown in the picture, the remaining users click remove to remove. If it says no error for removal, then click Advanced , click on the check box in Inherit from parent the pemission entries that apply to child . then click OK, click Copy in the message that appears.
B2: Do the same with the 'data-em' folder
You do the same as in the picture and then OK to finish.
So, now, we need to log Logoff out and Login to the admin account, and then try to access the 2 folders and see the results as desired.
