How to turn off Fast Startup on Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 / 8

Fast Startup is one of the new features built into Windows 10, 8.1 and 8. Operating system allows your computer to boot faster. Fast Startup, also known as Hybrid-boot or Hybrid Shutdown. The reason is because when you turn off the computer (or log off), the system will save a system dirver part and files to hibernate file (hiberfil.sys) and when you open the computer for use, It will use information from these files to open faster.

By default Fast Startup (Hybrid Shutdown) is enabled on Windows 10, 8 and 8.1 operating systems. However, quite a lot of users reflect that when activating Fast Startup mode, their computers often restart or hang. Also when Fast Startup mode is activated on Dual Boot system (Windows 8 operating system and other operating system), Fast Startup does not allow users to access other operating systems.

Disable Fast Startup on Windows 10, 8 and 8.1

Step 1: Press the Windows + R key combination, enter Control Panel there and press Enter to open the Control Panel window.

Step 2: Next on the Control Panel window, change the View By item (in the top right corner) to Large icons or Small icons , then click Power Options .

Step 3: In the Power Options window, in the left pane, click Choose what the power buttons do.

Step 4: Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable in green.

Step 5: Scroll down to find and leave the Turn on fast startup option (recommended) , then click Save changes.

Note:

If the Turn on fast startup (recommended) option is lost on the System Settings window, then you must enable Hibernate mode on your Windows computer.

Fixed an issue where Turn on fast startup could not be found in System Settings

Method 1: Turn on Hibernate on Windows

If the Turn on fast startup (recommended) option is lost on the System Settings window, Hibernate mode on your computer is disabled.

In this case, you just need to enable Hibernate on the system to display the Turn on fast startup option. To do this, follow the steps below:

  1. Open Command Prompt with Admin rights. Select Yes if the UAC warning window appears.
  2. On the Command Prompt window, enter the command below and press Enter to activate Hibernate:
 powercfg /hibernate on

  1. Finally close the Command Prompt window, then repeat the operations in section 1, and you should now see the Fast Startup option.

Method 2: Edit in Group Policy Editor

Note: Group Policy Editor is only available on 2 versions of Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise Edition.

To open Group Policy Editor , press Windows + R key combination to open the Run command window, then enter gpedit.msc in the Run command window and press Enter. On the Local Group Policy Editor window, navigate to the path:

 Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Systems > Shutdown 

Next in the right pane, double-click the "Require use of fast startup" option as shown below:

Next, to disable the Fast Startup option, select the Enable item as shown below and click Apply > OK.

To confirm the change, open the Run dialog box, type the command line gpupdate / force > press Enter and you 're done.

Method 3: Use Registry Editor

First, press the "Windows + R" key combination to open the Run command window, then enter regedit in the Run window and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. On the Registry Editor window, copy and paste the following key guide into:

Next, right-click an empty area in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it 'HiberbootEnabled'.

By default, when newly created, the HiberbootEnabled item will be set to zero, meaning that users can still change the Fast Startup feature settings in the Power Options section . To prevent users from changing, double-click the newly created key, change the default value to 1 and restart the computer.

You can check it from the Desktop screen, move the mouse pointer to the right corner of the screen, select Settings> Control Panel. In the Control Panel interface window , continue searching and open Power Options > select "Choose what the Power button do" on the left. At this point, you see the "Turn on Fast Startup (Recommended)" item is locked and grayed out as shown below, repeat step 4 in the first section to turn it off.
