Google will provide automatic software updates on Chromebooks for 10 years

Google is taking a bold step by deciding to provide automatic update support for Chromebook devices for a very long time.

Today, the company announced plans to continue rolling out software updates for Chromebooks for at least 10 years.

Starting in 2024, if you are the owner of a Chromebook device released in 2021 or later, you will automatically receive software updates for 10 consecutive years. For Chromebooks sold before 2021 and already in a used state, users and IT admins will have the option to extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform release date (once they receive last automatic update).

Google has also published a separate support page to describe how this new policy applies to all Chromebook models eligible for the 10-year update. In some situations, owners must opt in to receive updates, but for the most part, users won't have to do anything further.

Google has also announced a support plan to simplify Chromebook warranty and repair. Authorized service centers can now repair Chromebooks without a USB key. Google claims this change will help reduce repair time for Chromebooks by up to 50%.

In addition, the Redmond company is also working with several Chromebook manufacturers to promote the creation of new models using recycled materials and packaging, as well as improve the device's energy efficiency.
