Restart Windows Explorer when the system is 'suspended'

When using Windows 10, you can see that the Windows desktop has been frozen and you can no longer use the Start menu, click the program, drag the file or switch between windows. If this happens, the reason may be that Windows Explorer or Explorer.exe have problems and can often be fixed by restarting the process.

Explorer.exe is an executable file in Windows operating systems located at C: Windowsexplorer.exe . When Windows starts and users log on, the operating system will launch the Explorer.exe process, which displays the Windows user environment such as the desktop, taskbar, and Start menu.

Method 1: Restart Windows Explorer.exe through Task Manager on Windows 10

If you are using Windows 10, the easiest way to restart Explorer.exe is through Task Manager.

To restart Explorer.exe in Windows 10, follow these steps:

1. Open Task Manager by pressing the keyboard combination Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select Task Manager or right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager . When Task Manager is opened, click the More details option .

2. When the full list of processes is displayed, scroll down until you find the Windows Explorer process. Then right-click on this process and select Restart.

3. The Explorer.exe process will end and restart itself. During this process, you will see your desktop disappear for a short time and then reappear.

4. Now that Windows Explorer has been restarted, you can close Task Manager.

Method 2: Restart Windows Explorer.exe from Command Prompt

This method allows you to restart the Explorer.exe process directly from the Command Prompt. This can be applied on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10.

To restart Explorer.exe from the Command Prompt, follow these steps:

1. Open the Command Prompt of Windows by clicking on the Start button, enter cmd, then click on the search result Command Prompt appears.

2. When the Command Prompt opens, type taskkill / F / IM explorer.exe & start explorer at the command prompt and press Enter. This command will terminate explorer.exe and then immediately restart this process.

3. After you enter the command, you will see the Windows desktop disappear for a second and then restart. You can now close the Command Prompt because the Explorer.exe process has been restarted.

Method 3: Exit Explorer and then reboot through Task Manager

If you are using Windows 7 or any Windows version, you can also restart the Explorer.exe process by first ending the process in Task Manager and then running again from the Create New Task dialog box.

To restart explorer.exe by ending this process first, you can perform the following steps:

1. Open Create New Task by pressing the keyboard combination Ctrl + Alt + Delete and select Create New Task or right-click on the taskbar and select Create New Task . When Create New Task is opened, scroll through the list of processes until you find explorer.exe. Right click on explorer.exe. When the context menu opens, click the End Process option .

2. When you try to finish the explorer.exe process, the computer will ask you to confirm the request. At this prompt, click the End Process button .

3. Now, you will see Explorer disappear and only have a blank screen with Task Manager on it. In Task Manager, click the File menu and select New Task (Run .) .

4. When the Create New Task prompt appears, enter explorer.exe into the Open: field, and then click the OK button .

5. The Explorer.exe process will start and you will see the Windows desktop again. Now, the Explorer.exe process has been started and you can see the desktop. Close Task Manager.
