Windows Explorer is the default file manager that allows us to access folders and files on Windows.

To access it, you must click the My Computer icon (Windows XP, Windows Vista / Windows 7) or This PC (of Windows 8, 8.1). Another way is by pressing the keyboard shortcut Windows + E on the keyboard.

For Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7

1. Open Task Manager : either directly by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc or by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del and then open Task Manager .

Another way to do this is to right click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager .

2. Click the Processes tab .

3 . Find the explorer.exe process and click End Process .

4. To reopen it, click File> New Task (or open Run) , type explorer.exe and then click OK .

For Windows 8 and 8.1

What's new in Windows 8 is that the new Task Manager interface is more intuitive, realistic, and has more functions. Attached to it is an easier way to restart Windows Explorer.

1. Open Task Manager : either directly by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc or by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and then select Task Manager.

2. In   Processes tab , locate Windows Explorer (Usually in Apps group or Windows Processes). When opening the Task Manager interface for the first time the interface will collapse, click More details - Add details at the bottom

3. Click on it and you will notice that the Restart button is located in the lower right corner instead of the End Task button. This allows you to turn off the process and automatically restart immediately, without taking an extra step to turn processes back on Windows 7 and earlier.
