Reducing heart hormone may limit death from heart failure
Reducing the level of heart hormones commonly known as type B neuronal peptide or also called BNP produced in the heart can significantly reduce the rate of heart failure and reduce the risk of death in heart patients. All are shown in a new study.
Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart cannot pump blood normally.
The researchers found that patients with low levels of BNP had a 30% reduction in hospitalization, along with a 54% lower mortality rate than those who did not reduce the BNP hormone.
" Relative changes in the BNP hormone dosage can help doctors determine which patients can benefit from advanced medical therapies or better care screening to preserve life. " , Jose Benuzillo, a researcher at the Intermountain Medical Center in the Heart Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The researchers analyzed 6,887 cardiologists recently discharged from hospitals. All patients had a 21.1% admission rate after 30 days and a mortality rate of 30.8 days was 12.8%.
However, patients with reduced BNP levels had a hospitalization rate of only 16.1% and a death rate of 7.1% after 30 days.
Reducing the amount of BNP hormone among heart failure patients was determined by calculating the relative difference in BNP levels between patients admitted to hospital and those who were discharged from the hospital.
This finding is presented at the 2017 American Heart Association Scientific Conference in California.
