Install SQL server 2016 from the Installation Wizard (Setup)

This article explains step by step how to install a new generation of SQL Server 2016 using the SQL Server setup wizard. The SQL Server Installation Wizard provides a single feature tree to install all SQL Server components without installing them separately.

Download the latest SQL Server

Download SQL Server 2016 SP1:

Microsoft has confirmed the problem with Microsoft VC ++ 2013 versions. The runtime binaries are installed as required by SQL Server 2016. If the update for the VC runtime binaries is not installed, then SQL Server 2016 will meet a number of problems in certain situations. Install SQL Server 2016

1. Insert the SQL Server installation media . From the root directory, double click Setup.exe. Locate the root folder on the share and then double-click Setup.exe to install from the network share.

2. Installation Wizard runs the SQL Server Installation Center. To create a new installation of SQL Server, click Installation in the left area and then click New stand-alone installation New SQL Server or add features to an existing installation .

3. On the Product Key page , select Custom to see if you are installing the free version of SQL Server or the production version of the product with PID lock. Then continue to select Next.

4. In License Terms , look at the license agreement and if yes, click the I accept the license terms box and then click Next. To improve SQL Server, you can enable the option to use the feature and send the report to Microsoft.

5. In the Global Rules window , the installation process will automatically update Product Updates without an error.

6. If the Microsoft Update box in Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Windows Update > Change settings is not selected, the next Microsoft Update page will be displayed. By contrast, Microsoft Update will change the computer settings including the latest updates when scanning Windows Update.

7. In Product Updates , the latest available SQL Server product update will appear. If the updated product is not found, SQL Server Setup cannot display this page and automatically upgrade it to an Install Setup Files page.

8. In the Install Setup file page, Setup provides a process to download, extract, and install the Setup file. If the SQL Server Setup update is found, the update will be installed.

9. Select SQL Server Feature Installation in Setup Role , then click Next to continue to the Feature Selection page.

10. In Feature Selection , select the installation details. The description for each detail group will appear in the Feature description pane after selecting the feature name. You can select any of the checkboxes.

The prerequisites for the selected features are displayed in Prerequisites for selected features. SQL Server Setup will install the prerequisites that are not installed in the installation steps described later in this process.

You can also specify custom folders for shared details using the field at the bottom of the Feature Selection page. Please update the path in the last field of the dialog box to change the installation path for shared details or click Browse to go to the installation directory. The default installation path is C: Program Files Microsoft SQL Server130 .

The path specified for sharing details must be an absolute path. This folder is not compressed or encrypted. The drive is car-light not supported.

If you are installing SQL Server on a 64-bit operating system, you will see the following options:

  1. Shared feature directory
  2. Shared feature directory (x86)

The path specified for each of the above options must be different.

11. Feature Rules will automatically upgrade if all rules are passed.

12. In the Instance Configuration, specify the installation of the default instance or named instance.

Instance ID - by default, instance name is used as Instance ID. It is used to identify installation directories and registry keys for instance of SQL Server. This is a naming case for the default instance and named instance. For the default instance, the instance name and instance ID will be MSSQLSERVER. To use the instance ID not by default, specify another value in the instance ID box.

All SQL Server service packs and updates will apply to all details of an instance in SQL Server.

Installed instances - Grid displays instances of SQL Server on the Setup computer running. If the default instance is installed on the computer, you must install a named instance of SQL Server 2016.

Work will perform the remaining settings depending on the feature you specified in the installation. You may not see all the pages for your choices.

13. Use Server Configuration - Service Accounts page to specify login accounts for SQL Server services. The actual services configured on this page depend on the features you have chosen to install.

You can specify the same login account for all SQL Server services, or you can configure each individual service account. You can also determine if the service is started automatically, manually or disabled. Microsoft recommends that users configure individual service accounts to provide the least permissions for each service, in which the SQL Server services are fully licensed to be completed.

To determine the same login account for all service accounts in this case of SQL Server, provide the credentials in the field at the bottom of the page.

Using Server Configuration - Collation page specifies non-default collations for Database Engine and Analysis Services .

14. Use Database Engine Configuration - Server Configuration to determine the following features:

  1. Security Mode - Select Windows Authentication or Mixed Mode Authentication for your SQL Server instance. If you select Mixed Mode Authentication , you must provide the network password for the SQL Server system admin account available. After the device successfully connects to SQL Server, the security mechanism will be similar to Windows Authentication and Mixed Mode .
  2. SQL Server Administrators - You must specify at least one system admin in the running instance of SQL Server Setup, click Add Current User . Click Add or Remove to add or remove accounts from the system admin list and then, edit the list of users, groups or computers that will have administrator privileges for the instance of SQL Server.

Use Database Engine Configuration - Data Directories page to specify the default installation directory. To install to the default directory, click Next.

Using Database Engine Configuration - FILFESTREAM page to click or FILESTREAM for instance of SQL Server.

Using Database Engine Configuration - TempDB page to configure file size, file number, non-default installation directory and file upgrade settings for TempDB.

15. Use Analysis Services Configuration - Account Provisioning page to specify server and user or account modes will have administrative rights in Analysis Services. Server mode identifies memory and storage subsystems used on the server. Different types of solutions run in different server modes. If you plan to run multidimensional block databases on the server, choose to customize the default Multidimensional and Data Mining server mode. For administrator rights, you must specify at least one system administrator for Analysis Services. To add an account under running SQL Server Setup, click Add Current User. Click Add or Remove to add or remove accounts from the system admin list and then, edit the list of users, groups or computers that will have administrator privileges for the instance of SQL Server.

Finish editing the list, click OK. Confirm the admin list in the configuration dialog, after completing the list click Next.

Use the Analysis Services Configuration - Data Directories page to specify the default installation directory. To install the default folders, click Next.

16. Use the Report Services Configuration to specify the type of Reporting Service Installation.

After selecting the option, click Next to continue.

17. Use the Distributed Replay Controller Configuration page to specify the user you want to grant administrative rights to Distributed Replay Controller Configuration service. Users with administrative rights will have unlimited access to Distributed Replay management services.

Click the Add Current User button to add the user you want to grant Distributed Replay access to. Click the Add button to add permissions for the Replay Distributed management service. Click the Remove button to remove access from Distributed Replay service. To continue, click Next.

18. Use Distributed Replay Client Configuration to specify the user you want to grant administrator rights to Distributed Replay service. Users have unlimited administrative rights for Distributed Replay administration service.

The Controller Name is an optional parameter and the default value is . Click the name of the controller that the client computer will connect to Distributed Replay. Notice the following:

  1. If you have just installed a controller, enter the name of the controller when configuring each client.
  2. If the controller is not installed, you can remove the controller name. However, you will have to manually enter the controller name in the client configuration file.

Specify the Working Directory for the Distributed Replay client service. The default working directory is : Program Files Microsoft SQL ServerDReplayClientWorkingDir .

Specify Directory Results for Client Replay Distributed service. The default result directory is : Program Files Microsoft SQL Server DReplayClient ResultDir .

To continue, click Next.

19. Ready to Install installs a tree view of the installation options specified during the Setup process . On this page, Setup indicates the Product Update feature is turned on or off and the last updated version.

To continue, click Install. SQL Server Setup will install the necessary prerequisites for the selected features in the Feature Installation .

20. During the installation process, the Installation Progress page provides status so you can monitor the installation process when Setup continues.

21. After installation, the Complete page provides a link to the summary log file for installation and other important notes. To complete the installation of SQL Server, click Close.

22. Please restart the computer immediately after installation. It is important to read the message from the Installation Wizard when you have finished installing with Setup.
