Epic Games says goodbye to Windows 7 and 8
Starting June 2024, Epic Games Launcher will officially end support for Windows 7, Windows 8 (or 8.1) and Windows 10 32-bit installations.
Of course users can still continue to use Epic Games Launcher on these operating systems, but the lack of software support will eventually lead to degraded functionality, errors and instability, thereby affecting significantly to the overall experience.
Epic Games will still support the launcher on Windows 10 (64-bit), Windows 11 and macOS 10.13+. Discontinuing support for older operating systems is essentially an easy (and uncontroversial) way to reduce labor and costs, since the number of users on these versions of Windows is limited anyway. and increasingly narrowed. Additionally, this change could also lead to faster, more frequent, or more significant Epic Games Launcher updates since, the company would not be hampered by having to ensure Windows 7 compatibility or Windows 8 too.
In general, users who are still stuck with Windows 7 or Windows 8 will have to learn to get used to the fact that more and more services will stop supporting these old Windows platforms, especially for gamers. Some popular applications, such as Steam launcher, Plex, qBittorrent or even Microsoft Edge have stopped supporting older Windows operating systems. According to Valve, less than 1% of active customers currently use Steam on Windows 7 or Windows 8.
Continued use of legacy operators also leads to some security concerns. Many years have passed since the last update for Windows 7 or Windows 8 was released, which means both platforms are full of unpatched vulnerabilities. Through connecting these operating systems to the internet, users can be accidentally exposed to malware without knowing it. And if hackers want to take over Epic Games or Steam accounts, users of older Windows versions like these are the easiest targets.
But again, you can continue to use Epic Games Launcher on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 32-bit after June 2024. Epic Games is simply ending software support for Windows versions old. But over time, a lack of support will have negative consequences.
