Update KB5005033 causes serious error on Windows 10

Some users reported that their Windows 10 computer encountered a black screen error after updating to KB5005033. Specifically, Windows 10's default Alt+Tab function was broken after the July 2021 preview update and the August 2021 Patch Update patch.

The numbers of these two versions are KB5004296 and KB5005033, respectively.

While KB5004296 is an optional update, KB5005033 is a required update. KB5005033 was originally born to fix some performance issues when playing games, but it crashed Windows 10's Alt+Tab feature for some users.

When playing games, sometimes you need to use Alt+Tab to switch between applications. After updating KB5005033, when using Alt+Tab to switch between games and applications will happen normally. However, when using Alt + Tab to return to the game screen, Windows 10 will return you to the desktop or appear a black screen error.

With this bug, users will not be able to play the game in full screen mode because then they will have to play the game without using Alt+Tab. If you press the wrong button, the game you are playing will be interrupted. If you want to play games safely, force users to switch to windowed mode.

How to fix the problem

The main cause of the error is Microsoft's News and Interests feature. Previously, in the KB5003637 update, this feature caused the Taskbar to crash, now it continues to cause Windows 10 users to encounter an annoying error in the KB5005033 version.

The way to fix the problem is to turn off the News and Interest feature.

You can also remove the KB5004296 (if available) and KB5005033 updates to resolve this issue.

TipsMake will continue to monitor and update the official fix method from Microsoft as soon as information becomes available.
