New battery technology may soon replace lithium-ion
Group1, a startup company in Texas (USA) has just announced the world's first potassium-ion battery (Potassium battery - KIB) with industry standard size 18650, promising to replace lithium-ion batteries.
KIB batteries, instead of containing important minerals such as nickel, cobalt, copper and lithium, use potassium ions as the charge carrier, helping to minimize environmental impact and solve supply chain issues.
KIB technology can be compatible with existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes. This helps manufacturers not need to invest heavily in converting production lines.
The new KIB battery has an energy density of 160 - 180 Wh/kg, equivalent to an LFP battery. Additionally, KIB is capable of withstanding multiple charge and discharge cycles, helping to extend battery life. Therefore, this new battery opens up wide application potential, from electronic devices to electric vehicles with increased battery life, reduced replacement costs and maintained stable travel distance over time.
Group1 is ready to commercialize this KIB battery model. Today, the company has begun distributing KIB to leading battery and original equipment manufacturers.
The introduction of the 18650 Potassium ion battery marks an important step forward in the search for a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries (LFPs), while also promising to bring about new changes. Positive change for the electric vehicle industry and other future applications.
