Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter cooperate in an ambitious data project
An open source collaboration project for 'a more flexible future'.
Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter have both announced a new initiative called Data Transfer Project, said to be a new standard for transferring data between platforms.Google describes that this project will help users 'transfer data directly from one service to another without downloading or uploading.'
The current version of the operating system supports data transfer including images, emails, contacts, calendars and tasks taken from public APIs by Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Flickr, Instagram, Remember the Milk and SmugMug.
Many of these services have other ways of transferring data, but these companies hope their projects will help to make new options more flexible.Microsoft also called on other companies to join hands for 'flexibility and interoperability that is at the core of cloud computing'.
To transfer data between multiple applications requires the cooperation of many technology companies
This project code is now available on GitHub.Many codebases have 'converters' to translate APIs, allowing Instagram data to be used on Flickr and vice versa.Engineers must also build data decoding systems in the transmission process, giving security keys for each time. This system focuses on a one-time transfer rather than repeated times.
A lot of the code has been done by Google and Microsoft engineers.According to Greg Fair, Google Takeout's product manager, the idea comes from the discomfort of having too little data management after downloading it.'People want to transfer data from one product to another but can't.We will solve that problem, 'Fair said.
