Today's communication networks often provide only a few types of information services. Meanwhile, the need to exchange information of users is increasing and diverse, requiring the ability to connect everywhere at all times and high access speed. Broadband network is a potential development path to meet this need.

It is desirable to have a single network that provides all communication services such as telephones, e-mail, Internet access, watching movies, listening to music . to take advantage of the sharing of resources. network. This economic factor has motivated the development of an integrated service network. Integration will simplify network management, increase flexibility in improving existing services as well as introduce new services. With advances in broadband technology and high-speed information processing, deploying such an integrated network is no longer a dream.

Broadband network projects

An ideal telecommunications network needs features: broadband, multimedia, multi-point access, transfer rates at many levels, and a variety of services. It can convey information in the form of data, audio, still images, videos or any combination of these types of information. Meanwhile, each type of information has its own requirements for bandwidth, latency and accuracy when distributed on the network. Therefore, a broadband network has very complex components and structures.

Currently, the widely deployed broadband network is the B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) system that has a data transfer rate of 2 Mbps to hundreds of Mbps. This system primarily uses Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), which allows simultaneous transport of synchronous voice services and asynchronous data services.

B-ISDN has been developed by the International Advisory Committee on Telephony and Telegraphy (CCITT) of the International Telecommunications Association (ITU) since 1988 to provide a detailed plan for the integration of voice services. , video and triple play in the 21st century. B-ISDN architecture uses ATM at the data link layer to switch and SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) at the physical layer to provide high-speed connections.

Because it has to cater to a variety of service needs, the B-ISDN network must have a hierarchical structure, including user network, access network, trunk network (trunk network) and long distance network. There is also a management network (Telecommunication Management Network - TMN) and an intelligent network (Intelligent Network - IN) which are two networks that monitor, administer, signal and provide intelligent services for B-ISDN.

One of the fiber optic technologies being deployed by many countries in the world is fiber optic cable to the home (Fiber To The Home - FTTH), a broadband technology that is faster than DSL. In September 2005, Verizon in North America also introduced the FiOS (Fiber Optic Service) project, a telecommunications service that uses a fiber optic cable to run directly to consumers' homes, providing all services from voice, Internet data to high-definition television. The company hopes that by 2010 there will be about 3-4 million people registered to use this service.

Meanwhile, since December 2003, the European Union (EU) has implemented Broadwan project with the aim of developing technology and broadband network architecture, which focuses on wireless access methods. This project will provide broadband services for everyone in Europe. Broadwan has 25 participating partners, including network operators, telecommunications companies, academies and industry consulting firms from ten European countries.

Promising future

Analysts predict more than $ 100 billion will be invested in upgrading mobile service and broadband video infrastructures from now to 2011. According to Redback Networks, the company. Ericsson telecoms, video and on-demand programs account for more than half of the Internet traffic, and this number is likely to double every 18-24 months.

Redback said that during this time there will be three waves of development opportunities for broadband networks. The first wave is the increase in triple play services. The second wave is to combine business networks with users' networks to integrate communications and improve business operations. The third wave is to introduce faster mobile phone networks (with transfer rates from 14 Mbps to 144 Mbps) to maneuver the enterprise's manufacturing capabilities and user triple play services.

All three waves will expand the broadband market with more than 250 million users. Redback believes that about two billion people will use wired and wireless media to switch to multi-service broadband networks within five years. Therefore, telecommunication network operators need to integrate their wired and wireless communications systems in order to survive in this fiercely competitive environment. The two leading benefits of providing fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) fixed and mobile convergence services are to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) and revenue. Maintain the flow of information circulating in the network.

Alcatel also identifies the future of the international telecommunications industry depending on providing users the convenience of integrated services under any circumstance. According to the company, the ability to provide triple play services along with the convergence of networks and services are the latest assets of service providers. The key factors that contribute to the future success of a network operator are the packaging and integration of services to deliver them on the Internet faster, safer, more quality with less cost. .
