There is a new version of Windows every 3 years, Windows 12 coming out in 2024?
Microsoft is preparing to re-apply the traditional 3-year release cycle for major versions of Windows for clients. So will Windows 12 come out in 2024?
According to the latest information, Microsoft is preparing a new development schedule for Windows. Accordingly, the software giant will reapply the traditional 3-year release cycle for major versions of Windows for clients. At the same time, Microsoft will also increase the number of new features released for current versions of Windows on the market.
This news comes just a year after Microsoft announced that the new Windows will receive a major yearly update. Industry sources say Microsoft intends to roll out major versions of Windows for clients every three years, with the next release scheduled for 2024, three years after Windows 11 ships in 2021. Most likely Windows coming out in 2024 will be Windows 12.
This means that the Windows release originally scheduled for launch in 2023 (codenamed Sun Valley 3) has been scrapped but the story doesn't end here. With the move to this new development schedule, Microsoft is also planning to increase the number of new features rolled out to users on the latest version of Windows.
Starting from Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2), Microsoft has launched a new plan called "Moments". This is a technical effort aimed at rolling out new features and new experiences at key times throughout the year. It is estimated that, starting in 2023, Microsoft will provide new features for the marketed version of Windows every few months, up to 4 times a year.
Microsoft tested this system with the introduction of a weather button on the Windows 11 Taskbar earlier this year. The same approach will be applied to Moments. Many of the features that were planned to roll out in Sun Valley 3 will become part of the Moments on Sun Valley 2.
Currently, information about the Windows version released in 2024 has not been disclosed. According to multiple sources, this version of Windows is in the early planning and engineering stages, its internal codename is "Next Valley".
