The meaning of status icons on Windows Phone 8.1

If you have used WP for a while, you probably already know the icons in the status bar of Windows Phone, it is on the top of the screen. These status icons give you instant information about network connectivity, signal strength, battery level, hours and more.

Today let's take a look at them so you can understand the meaning of each icon on WP8.1 update.

The presentation will go from left to right of the status bar icon.

Mobile network signal strength

This will be the symbol that shows the state of your mobile wave. Below is a list of mobile network states including:

1. Very strong signal

2. Strong signal

3. Average signal

4. Weak signal

5. Very weak signal

6. Very weak signal

7. There is no signal because the phone is not connected to the mobile network.

8. Phone is in Airplane mode. Mobile networks, Wi-Fi, FM radio, Bluetooth and NFC sharing are all off when you turn on Flight mode. ( You can still turn on Wi-Fi, FM radio, Bluetooth and NFC sharing separately ).

9. Missing SIM card.

10. SIM card locked.

Mobile network data connection

Right after the mobile network, we have a text icon that shows what the network connection is in use. Note:

1. Mobile network data connection icons and the types of connections they display may vary depending on the mobile service provider.
2. Symbol
   Can be used for many different mobile network data connections - including LTE and HSPA +.
3. For LTE connectivity, you can see the icon
   instead of symbols
   or symbol

1. When your mobile data connection is being used to transfer data, you can see the icon
   , depending on the mobile service provider. This icon appears only on phones with Windows Phone software version 8.0.10501.127 or later.

We have network data connection states including:

1. GPRS

2. EDGE

3. UMTS

4. 4G

5. LTE

6. HSPA + / DC-HSDPA

7. HSDPA / HSUPA

8. RTT

9. EVDO

10. EVDV

Call forwarding

Call forwarding icon (

) appears when call forwarding is turned on.

Quiet hours

Quiet Time icon (

) appears when Quiet Time is enabled in Cortana's settings. However Cortana is only available on Windows Phone 8.1 and is only available in some countries / regions.

Roaming

Roaming icon (

) tells you your phone is roaming and not your local mobile network.

Note:

1. Roaming icon (
   ) may be different on your phone and may vary depending on your mobile service provider.
2. Depending on your mobile carrier, you may see this icon (
   ) when the phone is inland.
3. You can see this icon (
   ) when the phone has turned on call forwarding and domestic roaming or you can see this icon (
   ) when the phone has turned on call forwarding and international roaming.

Wi-Fi connection

1. Connect to Wi-Fi network with full signal. For information on how to set up a Wi-Fi connection, see Connecting a Wi-Fi network.

2. Connect to a Wi-Fi network; strong signal.

3. Connect to a Wi-Fi network; average signal.

4. Connect to a Wi-Fi network; weak signal.

5. Mobile network data connection is shared with other devices via Wi-Fi.

6. Wi-Fi connection is being used to transfer data. Depending on your mobile service provider, you may not see this icon when the Wi-Fi connection is being used to transfer data. This icon appears only on phones with Windows Phone software version 8.0.10501.127 or higher.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth icon (

) appears when the phone is connected to a Bluetooth device.

Notification

Notification Icon (

) appears when you have new notifications.

Driving Mode

Driving Mode icon (

) appears when Driving Mode is turned on. To use Driving Mode, your phone requires Windows Phone version 8.0.10501.127 or later.

Bell

1. The bell goes off and vibrates.

2. The bell goes off and vibrates off.

Location

Location Icon (

) appears when the application is accessing the phone's current location information.

The battery

1. Charging battery.

2. The phone is plugged in and the battery is fully charged.

3. Battery level is full

4. High battery level

5. Average battery level

6. Low battery level

7. Very low battery level — need to charge the battery.

8. Battery level or battery status is currently unknown.

9. Battery saver is turned on.

Virtual private network (VPN)

VPN icon (

) appears when you establish a connection with your company's network.

Clock

The clock displays the current time.
