According to Reuters, the government of the United Arab Emirates has an iPhone hack tool called Karma that can retrieve information on the iPhone remotely via iMessage.

Specifically, to retrieve information on remote iPhones (photos, messages, emails .) when tracking goals, people just need to enter the phone number or email address into an automated system.

This tool performs an attack based on a vulnerability in iMessage, allowing access to the victim's security data. This means that to get access, Karma just sends text messages to the target. The way this tool works has not been revealed.

This tool relies entirely on the iMessage vulnerability so it is only applied on iOS devices.

Karma was developed since 2016 by the former US intelligence staff working for the UAE. In 2016 and 2017, hundreds of people became Karma victims, including opposition political experts, human rights activists and rulers of rival nations .

Karma does not require links or activation so the person being watched will not feel abnormal. It is unclear whether this tool works on the current iOS version because by the end of 2017, Apple has released a security update that has made this tool significantly reduce tracking effectiveness.

Prior to this report, both Apple and the UAE have yet to comment.
