Microsoft confirms 3 new errors on Windows 10 and Windows 11 related to printers

The serious security flaw PrintNightmare has caused Microsoft to work very hard to find a way to fix it. However, the solutions provided by Microsoft caused printing problems for both the newly released Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Microsoft has just confirmed three more printer-related issues on Windows 11. Notably, the issue also affects Windows 10, mainly in enterprise environments with complex protocols.

The issues that Microsoft confirmed are:

Printer cannot be installed over certain networks

Devices that try to connect to the printer over the network for the first time may not download and install the necessary printer drivers.

This issue is observed in devices that access the printer via the print server using an HTTP connection. When the client connects to the server to install the printer, the folders don't match up, causing the file the installer creates incorrectly. Therefore, the driver is not downloaded.

Solution: Technology administrators with Admin privileges can install the printer driver on the client computer through other methods, such as copying the driver from a safe source. This issue only affects automatic driver download and installation.

The custom print attribute was not correctly provided to the client by the server

This error causes the print attribute defined on the server to not be provided correctly to the client. This issue is specific to servers and does not affect network printing. It also won't cause the print operation to fail, but the settings on the server, e.g. two-sided printing settings, will not be applied automatically and the client will just print with the default settings.

The cause of the problem was that the data file containing the print properties was constructed incorrectly. Therefore, when receiving the file, the client cannot read the content, so it will use the default print configuration.

Solution: Technology administrators with Admin privileges can install the printer driver on the client computer through other methods, such as copying the driver from a safe source. Alternatively, the client can manually modify it to apply the print settings it wants. Servers that use the default print settings are not affected by this issue.

Cannot install printer via Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)

This problem Microsoft has not found the cause and does not have a temporary fix.

Currently, Microsoft is still looking for solutions to the above problems, hoping to fix them all in an upcoming update.
