How to Update BIOS Safe and Correct for Laptop or desktop

Learn about the BIOS

The BIOS  is low-level software that is stored on a firmware chip located on the motherboard of the computer. BIOS checks, controls and connects the computer's components. Therefore, if the BIOS fails, your computer will 'fail' and can no longer boot.

Should BIOS update (flash BIOS)?

When a new BIOS (firmware) version is available, to decide whether to upgrade the BIOS or not. Then you can answer some of the following questions yourself?

1. What's new in this new BIOS? Is it related to your current computer configuration?
2. If you have a desktop computer, do you have a power bank? Or do you have frequent blackouts?

If the new BIOS only helps support new computer hardware (you don't have one), an upgrade to the BIOS is not required. And the new BIOS contains patches that improve the performance of your computer, you should update. The figure below shows the latest BIOS for my computer. Common errors when upgrading BIOS

The most common error when upgrading BIOS is due to power outages (desktop) or interrupted updates. If the power supply in your place is unstable, you should consider carefully before upgrading. Also, choosing the wrong BIOS version will also lead to an error.

How to see which BIOS version of your computer you are using

Press  Windows key + R , enter the command  msinfo32  and press the Enter key.

Go to the line  BIOS Version / Date , it will provide complete information about the current BIOS version. I can see the computer I'm using version J01 v02.15.

In addition, you can also check the BIOS information using software such as AIDA64.

Update the BIOS for the computer

Currently, most computer manufacturers and motherboards allow us to flash the BIOS from the downloaded EXE file. That means you just need to download the correct BIOS version on the home page and run the file to perform the update. Also have the company update again by copying to USB, then into BIOS Setup to update. Some vendors have their own BIOS flash software and BIOS, you need to run the BIOS flash software and lead to the BIOS file to upgrade.

When I run the EXE BIOS file downloaded from the HP homepage, there will be 2 options:

1. Update the system BIOS on this computer: Update the BIOS for the computer.
2. Create a USB flash .: create a USB to update the computer's BIOS.

Usually I use option 1, if your current computer cannot access Windows, you use another computer to create usb flash BIOS with option 2.

Before upgrading BIOS need to note

1. If you are a laptop, you need to fully charge the battery and plug it in.
2. If it's a desktop computer, prepare a power bank (if available), or upgrade the BIOS at a time when the power is rarely lost.
3. Close all open programs
4. Carefully read the information about the new BIOS

When running the software to flash the BIOS, the current BIOS information and the new BIOS are also displayed. If you ensure the power requirements and the correct version, perform the update.

Depending on the different manufacturers, but the BIOS flash method is also different. But usually, BIOS updates will consist of two steps: backup (save) and flash.

Never use the computer during the BIOS update. Do not start or heat off the computer. You must wait to receive the notification of success or reboot.

After flashing the BIOS, the computer will automatically reboot.
