Night photography is much harder than daytime. The less light you have, the harder it is to get the pictures you want. Whether you take photos indoors or outdoors, photos in poor lighting are challenging for the photographer.
Why is night photography difficult?
Most photos taken at night failed because the shutter speed was too slow when shooting. If the shutter speed is longer than 1/50 second and you shoot with a handheld device, the photo will certainly be blurred. The problem is not because your hands are shaking, but the camera itself. If the photo was taken with a shutter speed slower than 1/13 second, you will see the problem with the image.
Even when the shutter speed is fast enough and the camera does not vibrate, the shutter speed may still be too slow. If you want to capture the still moment of an object or someone moving, you will need to adjust the shutter speed to about 1/100 second.
Devastating can also be a problem. Most cameras are having trouble focusing in the dark because the system on your camera relies on contrast to focus, but in the dark it is impossible to determine the contrast. Even if the picture is not blurry because the camera or subject moves, it will be blurry because of the focal distance
Technical side
When shooting in the evening, in almost every case, you will need to set up the camera in priority aperture mode. You need to set the aperture from f / 1.8 to f / 4 . Whichever value is chosen depends on the lens width and image depth you want. The wider the aperture, the more light is entered, but it also reduces the number of pixels in the focus.
If the aperture is smaller than f / 4, you will not be able to capture the image without using a tripod. Shutter speed is the most important factor when shooting at night. You should keep the shutter speed from about 1/50 seconds to about 1/200 sec. Slower light penetrates more but you will need to make the shutter speed faster if the subject moves. However, in aperture priority mode, you will not be able to control the shutter speed directly but can only control the aperture and ISO.
Setting ISO to the lowest value will help you get the desired shutter speed. According to experience, when taking portraits, the ISO should be set at 3200 or 6400, which is much higher than the ISO required to shoot the evening. If your shutter speed is faster than 1/200 seconds, then the ISO is too high.
Some other tips
When taking photos at night, the scenery will change very quickly. In a moment when the picture was full of street lights, the next moment was all black. If you shoot where there is no light change, switch the camera to manual control and select the appropriate shutter speed, aperture as well as ISO.
Your camera will default to taking photos with daylight, so set the resolution to one or two points. This not only helps the shutter speed faster but also helps the image look better.
Choosing colors is also very difficult. Many photos are haunted with heavy orange that cannot be edited even in Photoshop. If you are not satisfied with the color of the image, turn it to black and white. If your lens is vibration resistant, use this function. It will help you slow down the shutter speed a bit but will only help prevent blurring if the camera is vibrated, but it cannot prevent blur when shooting moving objects.
If you take photos at night in the city, take advantage of the lights of street lights, shops, car lights and other light sources. If you take landscapes, things will be much easier. Use a photo stick and adjust the shutter speed accordingly.
The photo below is an HDR photo but the main resolution is about 8 seconds long, aperture f / 5.6, ISO 400 . On objects in HDR photos, if you take a scene, take each picture with a different shutter speed. Taking multiple photos will help you choose the best resolution photo.
If the camera has trouble finding focal points, the best thing to do is try and choose focus on the area with the largest contrast of the subject. After selecting, switch to manual focus mode or focus mode and take the picture again.
Never use the built-in flash of low-cost DSLR models. It will make the picture bad. It is best to choose a high ISO and convert the image to black and white.
But if you get LED light not from the camera, take advantage of them. It is another light source to help you take better pictures. The picture below captures three flash light sources, one below the person in the photo, one on the left camera and one on the right camera.
