1. Cases that need to reset the MacBook

There are quite a few reasons and cases where you need to reset your  laptop  , which can be mentioned as:

2. Notes before resetting MacBook

Data backup

Factory reset will lose all data on your device such as photos, videos, music, messages, etc. Therefore, you should back up important data so that you can use them after installation. machine again.

There are 2 backup methods you can refer to:

+ Method 1: Back up data with Time Machine.

+ Method 2: Back up data with iCloud.

Sign out of iTunes

If your Mac is using  macOS Mojave  or an earlier version, you should sign out of your  iTunes account  before resetting the device.

To sign out of iTunes, do the following:

Step 1: Open iTunes on your MacBook.

Step 2: On the menu bar, select Account > Authorizations > Select Deauthorize This Computer.

Step 3: The system will ask you to enter your  Apple ID  and password. After the import is complete, click Deauthorize to complete the iTunes sign out.

Sign out of iCloud

With a device using  macOS Catalina  or a later version, signing out of  your iCloud account is  as follows:

Step 1: Click the Apple icon in the left corner of the screen > Select System Preferences.

Step 2: Select Apple ID (Apple ID).

Step 3: Select Overview > Click Sign Out.

You'll then be asked if you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac. You can press Keep a Copy because you'll be reinstalling your Mac later. iCloud data remains on any device where you're signed in to iCloud with your Apple ID.

Make sure WiFi is stable

An unstable connection will take longer to restore and may cause errors during the installation process. Therefore, you should check the WiFi connection before resetting the device.

Ensure the power supply for the laptop

Resetting your device can take a while, so you should make sure the battery is fully charged. Or you can plug in the charger during the recovery process to ensure power for the device.

Disable Secure Boot (Apple T2 chip)

To reset the MacBook smoothly and without problems, if your machine uses Apple T2 chip, you should turn off the  Secure Boot feature .

Instructions on how to turn off the Secure Boot feature:

Step 1: Check that the machine must have an available operating system on the hard drive with at least one user (User) having administrator rights (Administrator). You can check by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups.

Your MacBook must have at least 1 user with admin rights

Step 2: You proceed to Shutdown the machine and boot into Recovery by pressing the power key and then holding down the Command + R key combination.

Step 3: Here, select Utilities > Startup Security Utility.

Step 4: At this point, the Startup Security Utility dialog box will appear, select Enter macOS Password and then enter the password of the Admin account.

Step 5: At the Startup Security Utility screen, select No Security in the Secure Boot Stick section and select Allow booting from external media in the External Boot section.

Finally, click on the Apple logo in the right hand corner and select Shutdown (or Restart) to save it.

3. How to reset MacBook simple and detailed

After you've backed up your data and signed out of your account, you can restore your MacBook to factory settings.

You can refer to the following steps to reinstall your MacBook.

Step 1: Restart the computer

First, click on the Apple icon in the left corner of the screen > Select Restart.

Step 2: Use the key combination

After your MacBook restarts, press and hold one of the following key combinations depending on the action you want to perform until you see the Apple logo appear, including:

+ Install the latest version of macOS compatible with the computer: Press the Option + Command + R key combination.

That is, if your MacBook is running macOS Catalina 10.15.1 and you press the above key combination, then after reinstalling, the operating system will now be the highest version Apple supports for your machine. For example, macOS Catalina 10.15.2 or macOS Catalina 10.15.3,.

+ Reinstall the version of macOS you're using on your Mac: Press Command + R.

That is, if your MacBook is running macOS Catalina 10.15.1 and you press the above key combination, after the factory reset is complete, the operating system on the machine is still macOS Catalina 10.15.1.

Step 3: Erase data on the hard drive

After pressing the key, a macOS Utilities window will appear. To restore factory settings and return the MacBook to the state it was just purchased, click the Disk Utility option > Select Continue.

Next, select Macintosh HD > Select Erase.

After that, the system will display an entry to confirm whether you want to delete the Macintosh HD or not. At this step, make sure that the selected format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You check the format again and select Erase.

 Step 4: Reinstall macOS

After the deletion is complete, you exit Disk Utility, this time the system will return you to the macOS Utilities window.

Click on Reinstall macOS > Select Continue.

Next, follow the instructions to install the operating system for your Mac. If you continue to use this device, then after the restore is complete, you can reset the information as when you first bought the device.

In case you decide to restore the device to transfer or sell to someone else, after the reset is complete, you can press the Command + Q key combination to turn off the device.

4. How to reset MacBook after reset

After resetting the MacBook, if you continue to use it, you must perform a reset of the machine.

Select region

After booting, the MacBook will ask you to select the country. Once selected, you can still change in Control Panel (System Preferences) under Language & Text (Language & Region).

 Select Keyboard Layout

If you select the region as Vietnam, MacBook will suggest ABC and Vietnamese as the standard keyboard. You just need to click Continue and the machine will be integrated with two languages, English and Vietnamese (Telex percussion).

Data recovery from Time Machine

If you're using a Time Machine backup   from another Mac, you can connect the drive. After connecting the drive and click Next and follow the instructions to migrate the data.

 Sign in with Apple ID

Next, you proceed to enter your Apple ID. If you don't want to enter your Apple ID at this time, you can click Set Up Later.

Set a name and password for MacBook

To use it, you need to set a name and password for your MacBook. You can use your old username and password, or change it completely.
