How to power off Xbox controller while Bluetooth pairing

The Xbox wireless controller can be paired with many other electronic devices via Bluetooth connection

If you own an Xbox gamepad, you probably already know that when paired with any device using Bluetooth, the controller will not turn itself off when the device connected to it is turned off. This is a rather ungainly 'error' because it can cause the handle to run out of battery if you don't pay attention.

However, there are a few fairly simple tips that can help you with this problem.

Turn off Xbox controller while Bluetooth pairing

As you know, Xbox wireless controller can be paired with many other electronic devices via Bluetooth connection, not just with Xbox Series X or S. For example, you can use Xbox controller with Apple TV, connects to iPhones, iPads, Android smartphones, and even PCs, as long as these devices support Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

The problem is that when connected to an Xbox console, the controller has a feature that automatically turns off when you turn off the Xbox. However, this feature does not work when you pair the Xbox controller with other devices. This is a minor software-related bug, but can lead to a lot of discomfort.

If you encounter a similar situation, here's what you need to do.

On the Xbox wireless controller, press and hold the Xbox icon button for about 6 seconds.

This will force your Xbox controller to turn off. When the indicator light on the Xbox logo button no longer lights up, your controller is now completely powered off.

To turn the controller back on, press and hold the Xbox logo button until it lights up. Your Xbox controller will power on and automatically establish a connection with the device it was most recently paired with.

In case this doesn't work, you can use another 'extreme' method than removing the battery from the Xbox controller to force power off.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix the problem soon to provide a better experience for wireless Xbox controller owners.
