Canonical releases Ubuntu Frame for embedded screen developers

Canonical, the development team of the Ubuntu platform, has officially announced the Ubuntu Frame. This is basically a tool created to give the developer community an easier way to build and deploy applications on embedded screens.

Such as interactive kiosks and digital signage solutions.

As revealed by Canonical, the availability of Ubuntu Frame will allow developers to now not need to integrate and maintain partial solutions such as DRM, KMS, input protocols or security policies. This frees up a lot of time, allowing developers to focus more on what's displayed on the screen, while reducing the number of bugs and holes in code that is no longer needed. .

To make the development process as simple as possible, Ubuntu Frame supports compatibility with toolkits such as Flutter, Qt, GTK, Electron and SDL2. Also comes with solutions for HTML5, Java, and many other popular toolkits.

Commenting on the launch of Ubuntu Frame, Michał Sawicz, Canonical Technical Director, said:

'Ubuntu Frame's capabilities have been extensively tested by us in real-world usage scenarios. This technology has been developed for more than 7 years, is a combination of modern techniques. It can be affirmed, Ubuntu Frame is one of the most complete graphics servers available today for embedded devices'.

Together with Canonical's operating system for IoT and embedded systems - Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Frame will be supported continuously for 10 years. This helps ensure devices will be supported throughout their lifecycle. In addition, Canonical will also provide a companion support solution to Ubuntu Frame product teams and enterprise customers, helping them troubleshoot any issues they may encounter.

Unlike in the personal computing space, where Ubuntu's popularity is much less than that of Windows, in the business world it's common to use the Linux operating system to do things like run servers. . Therefore, the appearance of Ubuntu Frame promises to create many positive changes.
