Canonical releases Ubuntu 21.10 with kernel 5.13 and GNOME 40
After a long period of internal testing, Canonical has officially announced the release of Ubuntu 21.10 'Impish Indri' with many major changes, such as Linux kernel 5.13 and GNOME 40.
In addition, this update will also completely fix the Firefox issue that has caused quite a lot of annoyance in previous Ubuntu releases. Normally, it takes days for Firefox to receive the latest updates. But starting from Ubuntu 21.10, this browser platform will be 'packaged' as a snap, managed directly by Mozilla and Canonical, so updates will be extremely fast, accurate and transparent.
The new Linux kernel 5.13 will support more hardware setups. The remarkable point in this update lies in the ability to support newer generation Intel and AMD chips such as Intel Alder Lake S or AMD Aldebaran, Besides the significant improvement in support for Intel and AMD chips. Microsoft Surface devices and Apple M1 processor add-on. If you used to have hardware compatibility issues with Ubuntu in the past, try version 21.10 to feel the change, and chances are your problem is solved.
The next big innovation to mention is GNOME 40. There was a lot of disappointment when Canonical decided to use GNOME 3.38 for the release of Ubuntu 21.04 this past April. But now, the company has had time to make the necessary changes and include it in this latest Ubuntu update. Notably, the Activities Overview section has now switched to a horizontal design (the Ubuntu sidebar is still vertical), which will help improve visibility and efficiency in the workflow. The Ubuntu sidebar now has the role of separating running applications from pinned applications by a small divider, the trash can is now also added on it.
On Ubuntu 21.10, LibreOffice has also been updated to version 7.2.1, Thunderbird is updated to 91.1.2 and Firefox to version 93. As mentioned, the Firefox package is now a snap package and can be deployed extremely fast. This will basically give the user's online security a bit of a boost.
Ubuntu 21.10 'Impish Indri' is not a Long Term Support release, so it will only get support until next July. Canonical recommends that users stick with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS if long-term support is needed. You can download Ubuntu 21.10 from the publisher's website HERE.
