10 problems when planning virtualization
Make sure there are satisfactory answers to the questions in the lesson before embarking on virtualization.
Network Administration - Server virtualization can bring many advantages, but effective planning is an important issue in your success. Make sure there are satisfactory answers to the following questions before embarking on virtualization.
Server virtualization is becoming a very common problem, but in the process of implementing people often encounter some problems with their data center virtualization. Here are some questions that you need to consult before performing your server virtualization.
1. Does your virtualization plan have error points?
Through research at an organization that virtualized all their servers. One problem we may encounter is that some organizations sometimes put all their virtual domain controllers into a host server. The problem is that if the host has a problem, it will cause problems for all domain controllers. So an important thing in the planning process for deploying virtualization servers is to make the host server error not affect consequently.
2. Are all your applications supported in a virtual environment?
There may be some good applications that are used but are not supported on virtual machines. For example, some versions of Exchange Server are only supported on physical servers. Some other software is only supported on certain virtualization platforms. So before you start server virtualization, you need to ensure that your applications will be supported in a virtual environment.
3. Do you have a server that does not have good virtualization certificates?
Some servers do not have good virtualization certificates. This is especially true for servers running applications that require a lot of resources or require special hardware. For example, some enterprise applications require copy protection through the use of a dongle (Dongle is a piece of hardware attached to a computer to run safety software. It is used as a picture. security protocol to prevent unauthorized copying of software. Dongle is hardly supported in a virtualized environment.
4. How will the domain controller work?
The above I mentioned the problem is that you should not place all domain controllers on a host, but there are many planning issues for domain controllers. You need to consider whether you want to virtualize all your domain controllers. If you virtualize all of them, you will have to decide whether the host servers will be domain members. Turning host servers into domain members when all virtualized domain controllers will lead to the 'what is first, egg or chicken' argue.
5. What is the most suitable virtualization platform?
There are many server virtualization products on the market, each with its strengths and weaknesses. However, for you, your task is to show which product is best for your situation.
6. What is your plan for unexpected server death?
A server error is something that is never wanted, its impact is coupled with a virtualized environment. A host server problem can drag several virtual servers and paralyze your network. Because hosts may be breached, you need to have a plan to minimize the impact of this problem.
7. How many clients can each host provide?
Surely the biggest mistake that administrators have when virtualizing a data center is overloading host servers. Therefore, planning to determine how many clients each host server can provide is an important issue. Since the clients are different, you need to get an idea of where to place the client when you start the planning process.
8. What registrations for this section will be required?
Software registration is often very different in a virtualized environment. For example, if you are using Hyper-V, you may not need the Windows operating system registration requirements running on the clients. Registration requirements are always dependent on the version of Windows being used. Make sure you know the registration requirements for the operating system and the applications that will be running on your clients.
9. How long has the server hardware been used?
How long virtualization usually lasts. You can reassign one of them to virtual hosts, but you can "retire" them. In any case, you should have a plan for your old server hardware.
10. What are your plans for surviving cluster servers?
Although cluster nodes can sometimes be virtualized, you may still find that nodes perform better on physical hardware. So if you decide to virtualize your servers, you need to make sure you don't put them all on the same host server. If not, you will eliminate the intention to have a cluster because the host will work as an error.
