How to prevent the Office Click to Run service from running in the background
Why is Office CTR running in the background?
As mentioned before, the Office CTR service automatically starts and runs in the background as soon as you open a Microsoft Office application. This is because the Office CTR service is required for Office applications to run.
Service Office CTR provides the streaming and virtualization technology needed to run Office apps. In addition, Office CTR service is also responsible for installing and updating Office suite. Therefore, if you turn off the Office CTR service completely, you may not be able to install the Office updates.
Steps to disable Office Click to Run service
You can stop and disable the Office Click to Run service directly from the services.msc application . Just find the service in services.msc, open its properties and set it to Manual or Disabled. Here are the steps for you to do that.
Step 1. Open the Run shortcut Win + R .
Step 2. Enter services.msc in the empty field.
Step 3. Click the OK button to open the Services window .
Step 4. After opening Windows services, look for Microsoft Office Click-To-Run Service .
Step 5. Right click on it and select Properties option .
Step 6. Click the Stop button in the Properties window .
Step 7. Next, choose Manual from the Startup type drop-down menu .
Step 8. Click the Apply button .
Step 9. Click OK.
Step 10. Close the Services window .
Step 11. Restart Windows 10.
From now on, the Office Click to Run service will no longer automatically start.
However, you can either start this service manually or it will start automatically when you open a Microsoft Office application. For example, if you open a Word document or an Excel worksheet, the Office Click to Run service starts automatically.
Note : If the Office CTR service is running while you are not starting or launching an Office application, select the Disabled optionin step 7. This option will disable the Office Click to Run service completely. However, you should turn off the service completely as it is required by the Office suite to run applications and install Office-specific updates.
