How to Clean a Flat Screen TV
While older glass TV screens can be cleaned with glass cleaner and paper towels, Plasma and LCD flat screen TVs often require you to be more careful when cleaning. LCD screens are made from a type of plastic and are easily damaged by cleaning with chemical cleaners, hard brushes, and rough cloths. This article will show you three methods for cleaning flat screen TVs: with a fine-fiber cloth, with vinegar, and technical measures to remove scratches.
Wipe with a fine-fiber cloth
Turn off the TV. If you don't want to disturb any pixels while they're still on, turn off the TV and moreover, when you turn off the TV, you can more easily detect smudges and dust on the screen.
Find a fine-fiber towel. The cloth should be soft and dry, similar to the type used to clean eyeglasses. This is the best choice for LCD screens because it will not leave fibers on the screen.
Clean the screen. Use a soft microfiber cloth to gently wipe away dust and dirt from the screen.
Do not use too much force on the screen when encountering stubborn stains. Now, you just need to apply the method below.
Do not use paper towels, toilet paper, or old shirts to clean. These materials are harder than fine-fiber fabrics, which can scratch the screen and cause fibers to stick to the screen.
Check the screen. If the screen is clean, you do not need to wipe it with detergent. If your TV screen has dried water spots, dirt, or other stains, move on to the next method to make your TV screen shine brighter.
Clean the screen frame. The hard plastic frame around the screen is less sensitive than the screen itself, so you can use a fine-fiber cloth or a regular duster to clean it.
Wipe with Vinegar and Water Solution
Turn off the TV. Again, if you don't want any pixel noise, and you can easily see any dirt on the screen, turn off the TV.
Dissolve vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio. Vinegar is a natural cleaner, and is a safer and less expensive option than other cleaners.
Dip a fine-fiber cloth in the vinegar solution and gently wipe the screen. For stains that are difficult to remove, you can gently rub your hands and remember to always clean the screen in a circular motion.
Do not pour or spray vinegar solution directly onto the TV screen as it may permanently damage the screen.
If desired, you can purchase cleaning solution for LCD screens at computer stores.
Do not use cleaning solutions containing ammonia, ethyl alcohol, acetone or ethyl chloride. Because these chemicals can damage the screen.
Use another small cloth to dry the screen. Because if you let vinegar dry directly on the screen, it will leave marks.
Clean the screen frame. With a hard plastic frame that has a lot of dirt, you can use a paper towel dipped in vinegar solution and scrub it clean. Then, use another clean paper towel to dry.
Remove scratches on flat screen TVs
Check the TV screen warranty. If the screen is severely scratched, and the warranty is still valid, it is better to replace it with a new one. Because you may not only not be able to fix it, but you may even cause other damage that is not covered by the warranty.
Use a scratch removal kit. This is the safest method to remove scratches from your LCD screen. You can buy scratch removal kits at stores that sell TVs.
Use petroleum jelly - the main ingredient of Vaseline. Dip a cotton ball in petroleum jelly and apply it to the scratch.
Use varnish. Purchase varnish and spray a small amount directly onto the scratch. Let the paint dry on its own.
