Final Destination: Bloodlines ending analysis
Final Destination Bloodlines - Bloodlines is the sixth installment in the Final Destination series and the first new addition since Final Destination 5, which came out in 2011. Despite the 14-year wait, fans are as excited as ever to see the latest addition to the beloved horror series. Final Destination Bloodlines is doing very well because it retains its charm while adding a new and exciting twist.
Final Destination Bloodlines ties the entire series together, as it explores the origins of premonitions and why certain groups of people are marked by Death. Bloodlines doesn't have a post-credits scene. Instead, the credits roll over various news clips, alluding to other intended tragedies. The film's ending, however, is absolutely explosive, so let's break it down.
Final Destination: Bloodlines Story
To understand the ending of Final Destination: Bloodlines, we have to start at the beginning. Like the other Reaper films, Bloodlines begins with a vivid, detailed disaster that results in dozens of deaths. It seems fairly normal, but by the time the premonition ends, the audience realizes that it's not the person at the center of the vision who has the intense premonition. Instead, a college student named Stefani has been having recurring nightmares about her grandmother, Iris, on the night of her engagement.
Iris and her boyfriend, Paul, visit the Skyview Restaurant Tower, a newly built, exclusive restaurant with live music and stunning views from the top of an extremely tall tower. Paul plans to propose to Iris at the top of the tower, but things keep getting in the way. Their reservation is lost. A child keeps causing chaos by stealing and throwing things from the top of the tower. The dizzying height is enough to make Iris sick. On top of that, Iris is pregnant and trying to figure out how to tell her fiancé.
The Skyview Restaurant Tower was unstable, and many other problems undermined the integrity of the building, such as a boy throwing a coin from the roof, a coin getting stuck in a restaurant vent, and a cracked crystal chandelier, weakening the glass dance floor. Iris had a premonition of the impending disaster that would kill everyone inside the tower, and she warned all the guests of the danger, thus saving everyone inside. Iris saved dozens, perhaps even hundreds.
Over the years, Death has come for those who escaped the Skyview Restaurant Tower disaster in the order they were supposed to die. Before Death came, one of the targets may have had a premonition of their impending death, hence the five previous films. Since so many people escaped Death's clutches that day, Death has spent years coming to terms with the problem. Those people went on to have families that were never supposed to exist. Death isn't just killing the people who escaped the tower. Death is coming for all the descendants of the survivors, hence the title of Death's Scythe season 6, "Bloodlines". The problem isn't just killing those who escaped, but also destroying any life that was never supposed to exist.
Stefani begins to have hallucinations of her grandmother's premonition when it is finally Iris' turn to go. Iris was the second to die in the tower, meaning Death had to deal with all the other survivors and their families first. Iris, having figured out what Death had done, has chosen to live alone in a compound where she can protect herself from Death's clutches, thus protecting her family from impending doom. Unfortunately, Iris has cancer, so her time is limited.
Stefani tries to connect with Iris to control her nightmares. She can't sleep, and her grades, health, and relationships are suffering because of it. However, Stefani gets more answers than she bargained for, and when she witnesses Death take her grandmother, she realizes that she must protect the rest of her family from a terrible fate. Stefani uses Iris' notes about Death and all the families that have been hunted by Death to try to save her family.
Final Destination Bloodlines' Ending and the Role of Death
As mentioned, Death will come to the survivors of Skyview Restaurant Tower in the order they die. This is a common rule. In all premonitions, the person with the premonition is usually the last to die, but they see the order of their deaths. When Death comes to claim those souls, it will come to them in the order they died. However, the rules of Bloodlines are a little more complicated than that. Since Death takes years to review the list, many of the survivors of Skyview have children and even grandchildren.
Death doesn't stop at the original survivor. After killing a Skyview survivor, the Grim Reaper will target the survivor's family. Any blood relatives who shouldn't exist, like children, are also targets. Take Iris for example: Iris wasn't supposed to survive. She was pregnant at the time of her death, so her survival would mean she had at least one child. We know that Iris actually gave birth to two children, and both of her children had children of their own. That means that once Iris dies, the Grim Reaper will go after her eldest child first, then go after that child's children in order of birth.
After Iris's death, Stefani uses her grandmother's notes to predict the order in which her family will die. Unfortunately, Stefani is not fast enough to prevent Uncle Howard's death, but after witnessing her grandmother and uncle die, she is certain of the order in which each death she predicts. The only problem she encounters is that she does not know that Erik is not Howard's biological son, so he is not related to Iris. Since Stefani believes Erik is the next target, she tries to protect him. As a result, Death easily pursues Julia, Howard's eldest biological child.
Eventually, Stefani and the rest of her family tracked down Tony Todd's infamous figure, William "JB" Bludworth. Bludworth told them that there were only two ways to stop the cycle of Death. The next person to die must either kill someone else or die themselves. He told them a story about someone who died but was later resuscitated. Dying and being brought back seemed to stop Death. So that's what Erik and Bobby tried to do to protect Bobby.
As most Final Destination fans can probably guess, everyone on Death's hit list dies. It's rare for someone to actually cheat Death a second time in these movies, but in Bloodlines, Stefani and Charlie believe they've escaped. Darlene decides to return to her mother's house, believing that if she can live like her mother did, her children will be safe. Unfortunately, their plan goes awry right outside Iris' house, and Darlene dies in front of Charlie.
Meanwhile, Stefani is trapped in Darlene's RV, which has flipped over and is slowly sinking. Stefani tries to get out but is unsuccessful. Charlie pulls Stefani out of the RV and performs CPR, saving Stefani's life. They both believe that Stefani is temporarily dead and Charlie brings her back, thus breaking the curse. The film fast forwards to Charlie's prom. Stefani takes Charlie to pick up her date, the daughter of a doctor. While talking about how Charlie saved Stefani's life, the doctor informs them that, technically, Stefani is not dead. If Charlie could have saved her, her heart would never have stopped. They have not broken the curse at all.
Nearby, the coin Iris had taped to her notebook rolls away, getting stuck on the train tracks. Iris takes the coin from the boy who was supposed to throw it at the Skyview Restaurant Tower, and keeps it with her to ensure it never causes harm again. Unfortunately, her plan doesn't work. Stefani notices a few things that match her premonition about the Skyview Restaurant Tower, like Iris's dress on one of the prom goers, and her finger pricked by a rose thorn. The similarities suggest that she wasn't just dreaming about her grandmother's vision; she was also seeing small details about her own fate.
An oncoming freight train derails due to a coin stuck in the tracks and speeds through town towards Stefani and Charlie. They attempt to outrun the train, but some of the cargo is thrown off in the collision. Large chunks of wood fall forward at high speed, crushing both Stefani and Charlie. Like most Final Destination films, Bloodlines abruptly ends after their gruesome deaths.
