Apple developed and released the TrueType font format in the 1980s. Since its release, the TrueType format has become one of the most popular formats used in both macOS and Windows.

Most modern fonts you find on your PC or online are saved in TTF format. However, you may also encounter fonts saved in .OTF (OpenType) format.

How to use TTF files as fonts?

To use a TTF file as a font, you must first install it on your system:

  1. In Windows, install fonts by placing them in the C:/​Windows/​Fonts folder.
  2. In macOS, install fonts by opening them in Apple Font Book and selecting the Install Font button .
  3. In iOS and Android, you can use third-party apps, such as iFont, to install fonts. (Note that despite the same name, the iOS and Android versions of iFont are developed by different developers.)

How to open TTF files

You can open TTF files in Microsoft Windows Font Viewer (Windows), Apple Font Book (Mac) or iFont (iOS, Android). Before opening the TTF file in Windows Font Viewer, you must place the file in the C:/​Windows/​Fonts folder. Otherwise, Windows will not recognize the file as a valid font file.
