Learning from Threads, TikTok allows posting posts that only include text

TikTok said in a press release on Monday it will begin allowing content creators to create posts using only text, adding more non-video features to the short video app.

TikTok allows posting of posts that only include text

Just like on Instagram Reels, content creators on TikTok can upload plain-background text for people to read as they scroll through the content. With text posts, TikTok says you now have more ways to express yourself beyond videos.

This is not the first non-video feature introduced by TikTok. Late last year, TikTok brought the ability to share multiple photos in a slideshow in Photo Mode. Here, creators can add captions of up to 2,200 characters. The new text posting feature is not too different from Photo Mode, except that the content is text, not an image.

How to make a text post on TikTok

Here's how to use TikTok's new text posting feature:

  1. Sign in to the TikTok app.
  2. Go to the Camera page.
  3. There will be three options: Photo, video and text.
  4. Select Text.
  5. Type the content you want to post.
  6. On the Post page, you can customize your text posts, such as adding sounds, tagging locations, enabling comments, allowing Duets, adding stickers, choosing background colors, and more.

TikTok is the latest social media company to introduce text-based sharing. Earlier this month, Meta launched Threads, a Twitter competitor that offers a slightly lighter and fun experience. The app was an instant success, with 100 million signups in its first week, making it the fastest growing app ever.

However, Threads' heat has waned considerably as the app still lacks many of the features found on Twitter. But it shows high demand for Twitter alternatives, as the age-old text-based social networking app has taken a dramatic turn after it was acquired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk late last year.
