Learn about Home Area Network (HAN)

The Home Area Network (HAN) is a user's indoor network where all laptops, computers, smartphones, as well as other smart devices and digital devices are connected into one network.

This facilitates communication between home digital devices that are connected to the home network. Home Area Network can be wired or wireless. The majority of wireless networks are used for HANs.

There is one central device for Network Address Translation (NAT) function. This Home Area Network enables communication and resource sharing between smart devices over a network connection.

Infrastructure of HAN

  1. A modem is used by the ISP to bring Ethernet into the WAN. There are DSL or cable modems indoors.
  2. Router is used to manage the connection between Home Area Network (HAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN).
  3. A wireless access point is used to connect digital wireless devices to the network.
  4. Smart devices / digital devices used to connect to the Home Area Network.

Devices connected in HAN

  1. Laptops and computers
  2. Smartphone
  3. Network printer
  4. Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices
  5. Security alarm
  6. Smart TV & Smart Bulb
  7. Smart speaker
  8. The device opens the main gate and garage door
  9. Media player or streaming device, etc.

Advantages of Home Area Network (HAN)

1. Accessibility

Home area Network provides better access for devices on the network to access Internet connection.

2. Share resources

Resources on the network can be shared over the network. For example, you can share video files from your computer with a smart TV using HAN.

3. Confidentiality

Home Area Network provides better security as it is enabled with security software, passwords, etc. to protect against unauthorized access.

4. Management

All devices connected to a home network are easy to manage and can be controlled without requiring a lot of user effort.

5. Maintenance

Once your home network is established, it doesn't need regular maintenance. Just be careful and monitor if it is working properly.

6. Multi-user

Home Area Network allows to work with many users in that house without any problems. All members can work simultaneously according to their needs.

7. Comfortable life

This network connects all devices into a single network. With the addition of IoT technology, everything will become automatic, giving people a more comfortable life.

Disadvantages of Home Area Network (HAN)

1. Expensive

Setting up the HAN is a bit expensive as it requires smart devices to operate in the network, eg laptops, smart TVs, smart washing machines, smart phones, etc.

2. Slow connection

When all indoor users use the shared Home Area Network, they may face slow Internet speeds. For example, when anyone is downloading a large file, others may experience a slowdown in the Internet speed.

3. Requires high security

It requires high security, otherwise, when attacker targets any device and enters home network, then they can steal important data from laptop, due to all devices. are connected to each other and are active on network shares.
