Just 5 minutes, hackers make 'ATM automatically release money', no password needed, no transaction record on the system
Many security experts claim that the computer on the ATM is old and insecure.
According to CNET, ATMs are very hard to break because they are always designed to be solid, money-reinforced cavity made of super-hard steel. Although ATMs also have weaknesses, it is the computer that people interact to withdraw money.
Many security experts claim that the computer on the ATM is old and insecure.
Currently, there are more than 3 million active ATMs in the world, most of them running Windows XP operating system since 2001 and no longer receive security updates. This is why ATMs have become a favorite target for cyber criminals, according to Charles Henderson, IBM's X-Force Red team leader.
Henderson's group demonstrated the method used by the bad guys to attack ATMs at the Black Hat 2019 cybersecurity conference.
With a custom Linux-based software and some code, Henderson's team was able to hack the ATM to make it pay, no need to enter a password and not record the transaction generated.
Henderson said that banks spend billions of dollars on network security but many ATMs with old operating systems make updating an enormous challenge.
