The team at the University of Washington (USA) carried out the attack with only an ultrasound device connected to a computer running software called Surfing Attack to issue orders.

According to the researchers, ultrasonic waves can be transmitted across a table made of metal, wood or glass. This means that if you put your smartphone on a table or similar surface made of this material, it is at risk of being hacked. The ability to transmit ultrasonic waves of a plastic table top is poor, making it harder to attack.

To make the attack, researchers first attach a microphone (to hear the feedback of the virtual assistant) and a voltage probe to the table. The results showed that only Huawei Mate 9 and Galaxy Note10 + were unsuccessful.
