Is Samsung Galaxy Watch waterproof?
People expect modern smartwatches to be able to withstand rain and accidental drops in swimming pools.
If you're looking to buy a Galaxy Watch and wondering whether it's waterproof or not, the following article explains how Samsung's smartwatch resists liquids.
Galaxy Watch is water resistant, not waterproof
First, let's clear up the most common misconception. All Samsung Galaxy Watch models are water resistant, not waterproof. But you might wonder what is the difference between waterproof and waterproof devices? Water resistance refers to the time and depth to which your watch can be submerged in water. On the other hand, waterproof means it will not be exposed to water.
So how is the water resistance of the Samsung Galaxy Watch? All models are rated IP68, which indicates a level of protection against solid objects and liquids. The number 6 in IP68 denotes dust resistance, while the number 8 shows it can withstand immersion in water for 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 1.5 meters.
All variants of the Galaxy Watch are also 5 ATM water resistant. This means it can withstand water pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 meters (or 164 feet) for 10 minutes. However, this rating is for still water, not for high pressure or when there is underwater movement.
Is it safe to swim with Galaxy Watch?
Now that you know that the Galaxy Watch is water resistant but not waterproof, you may be wondering whether you can swim with your Samsung smartwatch device.
The answer is yes. The watch is suitable for shallow water swimming and low-impact activities. This includes recreational swimming laps and even snorkeling. However, you must avoid intense water sports such as diving, surfing or jet skiing. These activities exceed the limits of water resistance and may damage your watch.
Note : Although the original Galaxy Watch launched in 2018 was IP68 waterproof, it is not suitable for use in swimming pools or seawater.
Tips for swimming with Samsung Galaxy Watch
Now that you know what water activities your Galaxy Watch is suitable for and the limitations of its water resistance, here are some tips if you want to swim without damaging your wearable. :
- In shallow water : Your watch is designed to be water resistant up to 50 meters. However, it should be in shallow waters where the pressure is low. If the water is too deep, the pressure can exceed the waterproof limit and cause damage.
- Enable Water Lock mode : Before starting, turn on Water Lock mode. This feature prevents your watch's screen from reacting to water drops or accidental touches. To enable it, swipe down to open the Quick settings panel and tap the water drop icon. When finished swimming, press and hold the Home button to turn off Water Lock.
- Avoid high-intensity activities : As mentioned earlier, water sports other than basic swimming are not suitable for the Galaxy Watch. This is because the water pressure exerted on your watch during such activities may exceed the static water pressure applied at the recommended depth for the device's water resistance level. Take off your watch before participating in any activities such as jet skiing or surfing.
- Clean your watch after swimming : Salt water, chlorine, and other chemicals found in swimming pools or ocean water can damage the water resistance on your watch. Use clean water to clean the device after swimming.
- Avoid using the watch in a hot tub or sauna : The heat and steam in a hot tub or sauna can also damage the seal that prevents water from penetrating. If the watch becomes too hot, the internal components can expand, causing the waterproof seal to break.
Galaxy Watch is a fitness tracker and phone companion in every moment, even while swimming. Thanks to its water resistance and features like Water Lock mode, it's an ideal choice for water activities. If you're planning to buy a Galaxy Watch, you now know what level of water exposure is acceptable and what level is too much for the device.
