Intel unveils first 5G M.2 modem for laptops
Ahead of the Computex 2021 event scheduled to take place from June 1 to June 5, Intel has just had an impressive 'launch' when officially launching the first 5G hardware product from the cooperation agreement. with MediaTek: Intel 5G Solution 5000.
Intel 5G Solution 5000 is essentially a 5G modem based on the M.2 connectivity standard for laptops, helping to enable OEMs to deliver 5G design prototypes, using standard interfaces. made easier.
Intel 5G Solution 5000 supports 6GHz 5G, but does not come with mmWave support. In return, this Modem can also connect to 4G LTE and 3G WCDMA. Intel 5G Solution 5000 is now carrier-certified in most major regions of the world, so this 5G modem laptop can be sold in nearly every market globally.
Of course, the product also supports absolute compatibility with Windows, Chrome OS and Linux.
In related news, MediaTek started sampling the first Intel 5G solution, based on the T700 modem, last summer. Both Intel and MediaTek have also worked with Fibocom to obtain carrier certification and assist in meeting the necessary regulatory requirements. In fact, the Fibocom side is also involved in supporting the production, sales and distribution of 5G M.2 modules.
Theoretically, using the M.2 format should help reduce the complexity of 5G deployment processes on laptops in general. However, in fact, putting this solution into the M.2 slot on any laptop is not a simple task. Basically, devices still need antennas to receive cellular reception.
Although it announced a cooperation agreement with MediaTek early in 2019, Intel's delay has made it difficult for them to enter the mobile 5G modem market, which is still very potential. Before Intel, Qualcomm also announced its own 5G M.2 modem solution based on Snapdragon X62 and X65 modems.
As planned, Intel 5G Solution 5000 will be available on products from manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS and HP this year. Intel confidently announced that by 2021, the market will welcome more than 30 different laptop models equipped with this 5G solution.
