Apple will not use Intel's 5G modem on iPhone 2020

Did Apple break up with Intel?

New news from Calcalist says Apple may not use Intel's modem on its iPhones in the future. The newspaper said Apple had told INtel that it would not use its 5G modem on its 2020 products.

Calcalist also said that Intel stopped developing the 5G modem - called Sunny Peak - because Apple is said to be the main consumer unit of this modem.Intel is said to have focused on improving this product to surprise Apple with a better 5G modem for its 2020 product line.

Intel representative said 'Customer engagement and Intel's 5G roadmap remain unchanged from 2018 to 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plan'.This is not contrary to the news because the discontinuation of the Intel modem is from 2020 onwards.

Last month, Bloomberg also reported from a study by analyst Gus Richard that Apple will stop using Intel modems instead of MediaTek products.Earlier this year, it was reported that Apple would stop using Intel chips on Macs in 2020.

Not sure who Apple will use the modem or produce it themselves?

The above news raises the question of whose modem will Apple use?Research by Ming Chi Kuo analyst in February said Apple will rely heavily on Intel modem this year to avoid being too dependent on Qualcomm.

Maybe by 2020, Apple will mend with Qualcomm or they will switch to new suppliers like MediaTek.But it is also possible that they choose the same direction as designing their own mobile device processor, and developing a 'home' modem.
