Support the Linux community
Google Drive launch is one of the biggest events of this week and attracted a lot of interest. However, the Linux user community may be disappointed when Google's cloud storage service does not support the free open source operating system.
According to PCWorld magazine, the term ' #DriveforLinux' becomes a hot topic on Google+, where many people are surprised by the fact.
Late Tuesday, Teresa Wu, Google Docs community manager, announced in a discussion on Google+ that: "We're working on Linux support." Ms. Wu did not publish details of the time the support began, but only said that this was about to happen.
If Google doesn't extend support to Linux users, Google will lose a potential customer base. Currently, a rival of Google Drive is Ubuntu One cloud storage service which is very friendly to Linux. Just recently, the announcement of Google to stop developing Picasa for Linux image management application has caused some negative feedback in this community.
Better than Chrome OS
Sundar Pichai, who oversees the development of Chrome products and Google's Google Apps service, said Google will tightly integrate Google Drive into Chrome OS version 20.
Chrome OS is Google's attempt to bring all applications and data to the web. This operating system works around a single application: Google's Chrome browser. Despite some success, Chrome OS still makes it difficult for users to move files from one place to another.
By integrating Chrome OS with Google Drive, Google will overcome this. Mr. Pichai said : 'With Google Drive, Chromebooks will become more powerful, because it only needs to work naturally, your drive is Google Drive'.
Basically, Google Drive - a web-based service - will work like that, it's the file system of the computer. For example, when you open the 'save file ' dialog box (save the file) on Chrome OS, the system will lead straight to Google Drive. Scott Johnson, who is in charge of Google Drive development, said: 'All of the main functions of the operating system will be using Google Drive as a data store, users are allowed to choose'.
