Intel revealed information about Core i9-12900KS Alder Lake 'special edition': the first Intel CPU clocked at 5.5GHz

In a tweet just posted on the official Twitter account, Intel first shared information about the special edition Core i9-12900K variant that it is producing.

The revealed content is not much, but it is enough to attract the attention of the community about a chip with an extremely powerful boost clock of up to 5.5GHz.

Talking about the name first, the Intel Core i9-12900KS can be considered a special version of the Core i9-12900K, with the suffix 'S' standing for 'Special' edition. We have seen a few similar versions in the past, such as the Core i9-9900KS, and all have upgraded performance compared to the regular version.

Regarding the specifications, very little information has been revealed. Currently, it can only be temporarily confirmed that Core i9-12900KS will be the top chip in the Alder Lake series, possessing a 'hybrid' architecture of 16 cores (8 + 8) and 24 threads (16 + 8), similar like the regular version. Which includes 8 high-performance cores based on Golden Cove architecture (P cores), combined with 8 energy-saving Gracemont cores (E cores). The high-performance P cores will operate at maximum boost clocks up to 5.5 GHz with 1-2 cores active, and 5.2 GHz with all cores active. Meanwhile, the E cores will operate at 3.90 GHz with 1- 4 cores, and up to 3.7 GHz when all cores are loaded.

The CPU will have 30MB of L3 cache and the TDP values will be maintained at 125W (PL1). But it's unclear if the PL2 will stay the same at 241W (MTP) or go beyond 250W. This flagship Alder Lake chip will provide unlocked cores for overclocking (due to being a K-series SKU). It seems that the Core i9-12900KS will mainly target the overclocking market, offering better stability at higher clocks. A previous leak has revealed that the new Golden Cove cores can deliver up to 20% higher single-threaded performance compared to their predecessors. More powerful but at the same time more energy efficient is clearly a big advantage.

The Intel Core i9-12900K has a list price of around $589, so the price for the i9-12900KS Alder will certainly not be below that threshold. TipsMake.com will continue to update information about this chip in the near future. Please keep an eye on it.
