James Gunn's Superman is one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. Why? Here are the reasons why Superman 2025 is loved right from the first trailer.
After a tough year for superhero movies in 2024 and a 2023 DC slate of underperformers or even failures at the box office, a lot is riding on this new Superman movie. Warner Bros. and DC are looking at it as the foundation for the next decade of movies and TV as the DC Universe begins.
Superman has released ten live-action theatrical films, not counting cameos or animated appearances. After so many iterations, audiences might think there's not much left to do with the character. However, director and DC Studios co-president James Gunn, with nearly 86 years of experience, says there's a lot of untapped potential in the last son of Krypton. Here's why Superman 2025 promises to be a "fever," a film that could be unlike any DC film before it and do what Black Adam couldn't by forever changing the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe.

The first "real" Superman movie in 12 years
When Superman hits theaters, it's been 12 years since Man of Steel debuted. While Superman certainly hasn't been absent from the big screen since, having appeared in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and a cameo in Black Adam, this is the first time the character has been given a real spotlight that isn't shared with another character.
Specifically, the time gap between the release of Man of Steel and Superman is larger than the seven-year gap between Superman Returns and Man of Steel, but not as long as the 19-year gap between Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and Superman Returns.
Superman is the center of attention
In the 12 years since Superman last starred in his own feature film, there have been three Venom movies, three Ant-Man movies, the entire DCEU. Superman director James Gunn started and ended The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Given his status as a pop culture icon that spans generations, the arrival of a new Superman-led film is always a big deal, and this one is no exception. After years of DC treating Superman as second fiddle to Batman, the superhero who built the DC Comics brand is finally getting a shot in the arm.
Release date right on summer vacation
Warner Bros. has given Superman an official summer release date. Scheduled for release on July 11, 2025, Warner Bros. is confident that Superman will be able to compete with Jurassic World: Rebirth and The Fantastic Four: First Steps that same month.
Warner Bros. carefully planned the promotion of Superman.
There have been reports that Warner Bros. is looking to launch a marketing blitz for Superman similar to the one they did with Barbie and are currently rolling out for Wicked. While Marvel Studios may kick off the summer movie craze with Thunderbolts*, it's likely that Superman will be the movie everyone thinks about. With Superman also set to debut before San Diego Comic-Con 2025, that means Warner Bros. and DC Studios may have something special planned for the film's release.
James Gunn's reveal of the Superman logo for the upcoming reboot hints at the direction the character and DCU will take in the blockbuster.
Superman Image Restoration
The 2010s were a difficult time for Superman and his fans. At the start of the decade, Batman was DC's flagship hero, and the dark, gritty aesthetics of The Dark Knight and the Arkham video game series had seeped into every corner of the DC Universe, especially Superman. Writers struggled to find ways to make Superman relevant to modern audiences, often reimagining the character as a darker figure.
The "evil" Superman team exploded in popularity in the 2010s thanks to the Injustice video game series and Zack Snyder's version of Superman in Man of Steel, Batman V. It seemed like the only way to make Superman "cool" was to imagine him as a bad guy. James Gunn's Superman needed to not only reboot the Superman film franchise, but also reassert the character as a hopeful "hero" for both new generations and those who knew him before.
