What is MOM.exe?

This software runs 'behind the wings' to help your video card run normally.

MOM.exe is an internal part of AMD's Catalyst Control Center, a utility that comes with AMD graphics card drivers. Driver allows video card to work normally, Catalyst Control Center is needed when you want to change advanced settings or control how the card works. When MOM.exe goes wrong, Catalyst Control Center may crash, become unstable and create an error.

What does MOM.exe do?

Just like how moms monitor and monitor your child's development, MOM.exe also monitors the components of Catalyst Control Center. It runs with CCC.exe, which is the host Catalyst Control Center application, and is responsible for monitoring the performance of any AMD card installed on the device.

Just like CCC.exe and related executable files like atiedxx or atiesrxx, MOM.exe usually runs in the background. This means that under normal conditions, you won't have to worry about it unless you play games on your computer, use multiple monitors, or need to change advanced settings.

Users do not even recognize when MOM.exe works normally

In most cases, MOM.exe is installed with Catalyst Control Center. If the computer has an AMD or ATI card, it will accompany the pre-installed Catalyst Control Center, along with CCC.exe, MOM.exe and other related files.

When upgrading the graphics card and the new card is AMD, Catalyst Control Center will usually install at the same time. Although it is possible to install only the video card driver, it will usually go with Catalyst Control Center. Meanwhile, MOM.exe is also installed.

Can MOM.exe be a virus?

MOM.exe is legitimate software, related to operating Catalyst Control Center but it does not really belong to the computer. For example, if you have an Nvidia card, it doesn't make sense that MOM.exe is running in the background. It will be left when you upgrade. It can also contain malware.

A technique commonly used by malware and viruses is to use the name of useful software for a malware. Since MOM.exe has been detected on many machines, it is not that no malware has used this name.

Running antivirus software can often detect this problem, but you can check if your computer has MOM.exe installed. It is not really part of the Catalyst Control Center, so it will be in the directory as shown below.

C: Program Files (x86) ATI Technologies
C: Program Files (x86) AMD

If you cannot locate the MOM.exe on the machine, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold CtrL + Alt + Delete.
  2. Click Task manager.
  3. Click the Processes tab.
  4. Find MOM.exe in the Name column.
  5. Write what it says in the corresponding command line column.
  6. Without this column, right-click the Name column and left mouse button on the Command Line.

If you find MOM.exe located somewhere, for example C: Mom or in the Windows directory, you should upgrade your antivirus software or malware right away.

What to do when MOM.exe fails?

When MOM.exe works normally, you won't even know. But if it stops working, you will see many pop-up error messages, probably MOM.exe cannot run or must stop running. The message box will also provide more information.

Here are 3 ways to try when encountering an error with MOM.exe:

  1. Make sure the video card driver is up to date.
  2. Download and install the latest version of Catalyst Control Center from AMD.http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/catalyst
  3. Download and install the latest version of .NET Frameword from Microsoft.https://www.microsoft.com/net/download?ranMID=24542&ranEAID=TnL5HPStwNw&ranSiteID=TnL5HPStwNw-0WT0herd7p1e2S2wdfsZUQ&tduid= (133bb7460fbeb8e97c1a75187227df9b) (256380) (2459594) (TnL5HPStwNw-0WT0herd7p1e2S2wdfsZUQ) ()
