Overview of computer video card
Below are the visual examples of video cards inside the computer. First, is an image of AGP video card. It helps the reader have an overview of the previous video card, with various types of connections and other components on the card. Next is an example of a modern PCI Express video card, commonly used in today's gaming computers.
Note : Some motherboards can also use on-board video cards, which means the video card is not a separate expansion card as shown below:
Video card ports
The images above also help illustrate the types of ports used for video cards. For more information on any of these ports, click on the links below.
- DVI: (Digital Visual Interface stands) DVI is a video display interface. It was developed to become an industry standard to transmit digital video content, display devices at high resolutions up to 2560 x 1600. Common devices that use DVI connectivity are monitors. computer and projector. DVI can even be used with some TVs, although HDMI is more popular because only some DVI cables can transmit audio signals. The DVI connector (shown below) may have one of three names depending on the supported signal: DVI-A (analog only), DVI-D (digital only) or DVI-I (both digital and analog).
- HDMI: (stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface) HDMI is a connector and cable capable of transmitting quality audio and video streams and high bandwidth between devices. HDMI technology is used with devices such as HDTV, projector, DVD player or Blu-ray player.
- S-Video: S-Video, also known as Y / C video, stands for Super Video. This is the video transmission format and the connection type found on the video device. It uses a circular connection interface, and a separate luminance (Y) and chrominance (C) video signal transmission cable. When plugged into a TV or other display device, it creates a better image when compared to composite video.
- VGA: (Short for Video Graphics Adapter or Video Graphics Array). VGA is a popular display standard developed and introduced by IBM in 1987. VGA provides a 640 x 480 color screen with 60Hz refresh rate and 16 colors displayed at the same time. If the resolution is lowered to 320 x 200, there will be 256 colors displayed. VGA uses analog signals, which means it only has the ability to display lower quality resolutions on the screen.
In the past, VGA or SVGA was the most common connection used for computer monitors. Today, most flat screens use DVI or HDMI connections.
Video card expansion slot (connection)
The video card expansion slot is where the card connects to the motherboard. In the image above, the video card is inserted into the AGP expansion slot on the computer's motherboard. Along with the development of computers, there have been several types of expansion slots used for video cards. Today, the most popular expansion slot for video cards is PCIe. Older slots are AGP, PCI and ISA respectively.
Note : Some OEM computers and motherboards may have onboard video cards or built-in motherboards.
Can I install multiple video cards?
Of course possible. Both AMD Radeon cards (using Crossfire) and NVIDIA GeForce (using SLI) are capable of running two or more video cards at the same time.
