Unity - a bold but necessary step

On the desktop side, according to Allison Randal, Ubuntu's chief architect, in this new version of Oneiric Ocelot, developers have focused a lot on making the OS more user-friendly and easy to use. with users.

The inclusion of the Unity interface as the default interface in the previous version (11.04) is a start for this orientation. She said Canonical has done a lot of testing with users, and the goal is to redesign the Linux workstation interface to make it more accessible to users.

Although the use of Unity has generated many negative comments, most of them are common reactions when an operating system changes the interface. Anyway, 'this is still an important change in reaching a large number of users. And this is a bold but necessary step, 'Ms. Randal added.

In this new version GNOME 3 is also included, along with Unity 2D for hardware devices that do not support Unity 3D.

Integrated backup capability

A new feature added in Oneiric Ocelot is especially useful for small business users as the ability to back up data. Ubuntu 11.10 integrates Deja Dup software with full basic backup features. Using Deja Dup personal and business users can back up data to local drives or back up to the Ubuntu One cloud. Users can also set a backup schedule or perform recovery from backups.

Besides Deja Dup, Thunderbird is included in the new version of Ubuntu and is chosen as the default email application. Randal said Canonical has been working with Mozilla developers to come up with a full-featured version of Thunderbird with the interface that best fits Unity's interface.

Along with that, Ubuntu One, a personal cloud service, allows users to access data from PC and devices running Android or iOS. Using this service, users can upload and share music, movies, photos and documents through various devices running different operating systems including Windows. Each Ubuntu One account is provided with 5GB of free storage.

An ARM version

On the server side, Ubuntu 11.10 is a version that contains many new and advanced features. Mark Baker, Ubuntu's server product manager, said: 'This is really an important step in making Ubuntu a cloud computing platform.'

While version 10.04, Ubuntu only provides a 'preview release' of OpenStack, this version will be the first version of Ubuntu Cloud running on OpenStack.

Just last week, HP announced it had chosen Ubuntu to run on its public cloud.

Oneiric Ocelot is also the first version to support ARM chips. Talking about this improvement step Mark Baker thinks that a major problem with today's servers is the size and level of electricity consumption. In the future, ARM chips will be a good alternative to existing chips, and Ubuntu hopes to become a support and promotion platform.
