The undersea cable of Microsoft and Facebook has been completed
This cable named Marea is a collaborative product of Facebook, Microsoft and Spanish telecommunications company Telxius.
At a depth of 17,000 feet (more than 5 km) below sea level is the 'most technologically advanced underground cable', providing up to 160 terabit (Tbps) of data per second - defeating Google's cable named Faster. This cable is the product of Facebook, Microsoft and Spanish telecommunications company Telxius.
The construction of a 4,000-mile cable line (nearly 6,500 kilometers) from the Virginia coast to Bilbao, Spain, begins in August 2016. On Thursday, Microsoft announced that the cable line had been completed but would not be operational until early 2018.
Facebook, Microsoft and Telxius will co-own this cable, which weighs 10.25 million pounds (34 whales). Telxius is responsible for operating, selling and leasing parties to service providers.
The cable is said to have the most advanced technology Marea
Microsoft and Facebook will use the cable for their own needs.
Most trans-ocean telecom cables to the US are located in New York or New Jersey. But Marea - the name of this cable, meaning 'wave' in Spanish, is connected to Virginia, making the connection between the US and Europe more diverse. Super Hurricane Sandy landed in New York and New Jersey in 2012, causing North America and Europe to die in a few days.
"Super typhoons make us realize that big events can affect the transatlantic connection," Microsoft said. 'In an effort to invent and expand the global network, Microsoft has been looking for a solution to connect across the Atlantic more firmly.'
Microsoft did not disclose the amount of its investment and its partners.
