Starting from the OLPC project (One Laptop Per Child - Every Child with a Laptop) since 2005, aims to provide poor children with low-cost computers. The project has attracted many big names in the field of manufacturing computer equipment, components, software of the world to join such as Intel, Microsoft . but so far has not created any significant imprint.

Intel joined the OLPC project but also produced cheap Classmate laptops to rival OLPC's XO laptop, pushing the low-cost laptop market to a new level. The XO laptop costs $ 200, while the Classmate PC is about $ 285. Both of these products are aimed at children who are children in developing countries, where prices are always a big problem, making access to computers still difficult. However, this market only really exploded after the success of Asus Eee PC (Taiwan) in 2007.

In response to the unexpected success of the Eee PC, earlier this year a series of "giants" went on. In the middle of February, the American computer company Everex introduced the Cloudbook laptop running Linux operating system quite similar to the Asus Eee PC. The Everex Cloudbook also has a 7-inch screen, a 1.2 GHz Via C7 ULV processor, 512 MB RAM, a 30 GB hard disk, WiFi connection, a 1.3 Mp webcam integrated and sells for about $ 400 (more than 6 million VND).

At the same time, another British company, Elonex, introduced a compact laptop called One for about $ 200. Near the same goal as the OLPC project, the Laptop One also targets children in the UK with the motto that every 100 One laptops sold will have a free for poor children.

In front of this promising new market, familiar computer brands from Taiwan could not stand and watch. Acer, the third-largest PC brand in the world, announced it would produce its own low-cost laptop with a 7-9-inch screen, priced at about $ 470 and will be a direct competitor to the Eee PC. . Dell is waiting for users with a new laptop called the Inspiron 1525 to sell for less than $ 500.

In addition to familiar brands, some new names have also jumped into this new market, such as India's HCL Infosystems hardware maker with two low-cost MiLeap X and MiLeap Y laptops for their country's market. The price is about 350 USD. Most recently, the introduction of Noreckec's Gecko computer model with the price of only 300 USD.

In fact, most new laptops are constantly improving their capabilities and speed, selling prices have decreased but are still high compared to the income of most users. According to many computer stores, laptop models priced at US $ 500-800 are the choice of most users.
