Instructions for restoring the system on Windows

If you encounter an error with a Windows-based computer, you can use System Restore to restore system files, program files, and registry information to a previous state. If these files are damaged, System Restore will replace them with a better version thereby fixing the problem. However, System Store is not always effective. You may encounter an error message or the recovery process cannot resolve the error.

Try some of the following ways to fix System Restore-related errors, including executing System Restore in Safe Mode, where other applications cannot affect the operating system.

Use another restore point

First, try using another restore point when you see an error message while attempting to restore the system or even though the system restore has been successful but the issue has not been resolved.

From the System Restore window (click Start, type System Restore and press Enter to open), select Choose a different restore point and click Next .

Select a system restore point that was created before the error occurred. Many recent restore points may have been created after an error occurred, so they may not work. To view all available restore points , check Show more restore points in this window.

This is the most ideal measure to overcome errors. However, if you see an error message appear or if System Restore doesn't work, switch to the solution below.

Use Safe Mode

System Restore replaces the system files on the computer with system files from a restore point. However, some applications, especially antivirus programs and some other background services may affect the recovery process. The antivirus program tries to protect the file system so they can block System Restore from replacing the file. Other types of applications, even malware, may be able to prevent System Restore from working.

To avoid services running in the background, start Windows in Safe Mode and execute System Restore here. In Safe Mode, Windows will not load startup applications and third-party drivers, so they cannot prevent System Restore from working.

To start Windows in Safe Mode, restart the computer and then press and hold the F8 key while the computer starts. Select Safe Mode from the boot menu and press Enter .

Launch System Restore in Safe Mode. Once completed, restart the computer to be running Windows in normal mode.

Reinstall Windows

If System Restore doesn't work even if it starts in Safe Mode, the program files may be corrupted. Or, if System Restore works but doesn't fix the error, you may not have any restore points created before the error occurs. Now, restore the operating system from its recovery partition or reinstall Windows.

First, remember to backup your personal data. The reinstallation process will lose some files and programs on the hard drive. After that, perform system restore. There are three ways to do this:

  1. Most laptops and computers have recovery partitions that can be activated by pressing a special key while the computer starts up. Check the device manual for the exact key and related instructions.
  2. If there is a system recovery disk instead of a recovery partition, insert the disk into the computer drive and restart the computer to start the recovery process.
  3. Reinstall Windows by examining the Windows installation disc into your computer and restarting the computer.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the system recovery process or reinstall Windows.
