Dynamic DNS service (DDNS) is the solution when you want to access the router from the Internet, but it has a dynamic IP address. You can register Dynamic DNS service and register hostname for the router. With the Dynamic DNS setting, the router will update the server's current WAN IP address periodically to the Dynamic DNS server or, if the router is on a private network, it can update the Internet gateway's IP address to the server.

The router activates updates when:

  1. Turned on or restarted
  2. The IP address of the WAN interface changes
  3. The online state of the WAN interface changes
  4. DDNS function is enabled
  5. The activated DDNS setting is modified
  6. Auto-Update Interval is over

The following article will show you how to set up Dynamic DNS with predefined service providers and with user-defined APIs.

Set up DDNS with predefined service provider

1. After registering an account and hostname, go to Applications> Dynamic DNS , enable Dynamic DNS Setup and click on the available index number.

  3. Select the Dynamic DNS service provider you are using in the Dynamic DNS Service Provider .
  4. Enter the domain name that you registered in Domain Name.
  5. Enter the login name and password of the Dynamic DNS service.
  6. Use "WAN IP" for Determine Real WAN IP if the router's WAN network is directly connected to the Internet. If the Vigor Router uses NAT notation, use "Internet IP" instead.
  7. Click OK to save.

Set up DDNS with user defined API

If your service provider is not listed, you can use the API by selecting "User-Defined" in the Service Provider.

You can use the API by selecting "User-Defined" in the Service Provider

Then enter the updated server's domain name into the Provider Host and enter the rest of the URL in the Service API. Typically, updates sent via HTTP or HTTP requests contain the following information: Username, password, host name and IP address. An updated URL will be similar to the following:

http://updateddns.example.com/ddns/update?username=[user name]&password=[password]&hostname=[hostname]&myip=[IP]

Where [username], [password] and [hostname] need to be replaced with the username, password and hostname registered at the service provider, [IP] should be replaced with the WAN IP of the router. For [IP] , you could enter ### IP ### instead , then the router will replace ### IP ### with the current IP interface when sending the HTTP request.

The syntax of the update URL will vary between providers, please refer to the API instructions for the correct syntax to use. Here are some examples.
