Laptop batteries do not exist forever
Not all laptop batteries are created equal. Laptop batteries have a capacity defined in milliamp-hour (mAH). The higher the mAH value, the more the battery holds power. In general, the more expensive the battery, the better, but you can check the manufacturer's specs if you're unsure.
The amount of battery life you use on laptops without having to charge extra depends on how you use the computer. Leaving the screen at maximum brightness, watching videos and running multiple software are things that drain the battery faster.
No matter how carefully you use your laptop, the total battery capacity will decrease over time. Each battery has a specific charge and charge cycle. These are also affected by environmental factors such as temperature. Of course, batteries don't last as long as laptops. Typically you will see battery time decrease after 18 to 24 months.
You can use the battery health checker tool to better understand how it works.
The remaining battery life is predictable
Before getting into the fixes below, you should understand how to calculate battery life.
Calculating the battery life of Windows is only predictive. It is based on what is being done on the computer and thinks it will continue with those actions.
If watching videos or playing games, Windows will not estimate much of the time remaining.
However, if you stop playing the game, lower the screen brightness, and only open Word documents, the remaining hours on the battery will increase.
This number also changes even if you do not actively do anything if there is a program that is installing updates in the background.
Therefore, if the remaining hours increase or decrease according to the action taken, it is normal but if your laptop suddenly shuts down at 30% then there is definitely a problem.
Calibrate laptop battery
If your laptop battery meter shows an incorrect number, the best way to solve this problem is to correct it. Perform by running the battery from full charge to full and then fully charge again.
This process does not provide additional power to or increases laptop battery life but will allow Windows to accurately read the battery life.
1. Adjust the Power Plan
Step 1. To begin, right-click on the battery icon on the Taskbar. Click on Power Options , then Change when the computer sleeps from the left menu.
Step 2. Note the installation now because you need to reset it later. Change everything to Never and click Save changes .
Step 3. Click Change advanced power settings . Expand Battery , then expand Critical battery level . Record the current percentage for later use. Click on the On battery percentage and set it to the lowest possible level.
Step 4. Expand Critical battery action and make sure On battery is set to Hibernate . If not, click to change it.
Step 5 . When done, click on Ok to save changes.
2. Laptop charger
Plug in the laptop and charge the battery to 100%. You can still use a laptop during this process. When the battery is 100% full, stop using the laptop and wait a few hours for the battery to cool down.
3. Unplug the laptop
Unplug the laptop and let the battery run out. Once again you can use the computer during this time. You will need to wait until the laptop is completely discharged and turned off. Then wait a few more hours.
4. Charge the laptop again
Plug in laptop charger and charge the battery to 100%. Return to Windows power settings, follow the previous instructions, and set everything back to its original state or adjust it to your liking.
Battery percentage will now be accurate. If not, follow the steps below.
Reinstall the battery driver
The battery driver may be missing or damaged and thus cause an error in displaying the battery percentage incorrectly. Please reinstall them.
Press Windows
key + X
and click on Device Manager . Expand Batteries , you will see Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery .
Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and click on Uninstall device . Wait for the process to complete.
When done, from the top menu, click on Action> Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. Restart the computer when finished.
Update Windows
You must always update Windows to protect your system and benefit from the latest features.
The problem with obsolete Windows is that the percentage of battery displayed when hovering over the icon is different than the percentage of battery displayed when clicking on it that is one percent.
To make sure the computer is running the latest version of Windows, press Win
+ I
to open Settings , click on Update & Security and click on Check for updates . If there is an update, it will automatically download and install.
